SANADA Nobuyuki is the eldest son of Sanada Masayuki. Unlike his father and his younger brother Nobushige, he sided with Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Battle of Sekigahara as he married Ina, daughter of Honda Tadakatsu, one of the vassals of the Tokugawas. He became the first lord of Matsushiro Han (Domain)later.
He was said to have been earnest and rigid but skillful in battle. After the Siege of Odawara in 1590, he became the lord of Numata Castle and was given jyu goi no ge, Izunokami in 1594. Though he once became the lord of Ueda Castle after the Battle of Sekigahara, he was forced to destroy the castle and moved to Matsushiro in current Nagano. As he lived to the age of ninety-three (in Japanese style), he met with many troubles in his life but overcame such difficulties. In this respect, he was not a mere rigid man.
In this drama, he is described as a man who does what he should do steadily though being tossed by his father. On the other hand, he is puzzled by the abrupt manner of his wife Ina and attracted to Ko, his former wife and cousin who was forced to divorce him because of the marriage with Ina.
