TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi was one of most famous historical figure in Japan. He was born as son of a farmer in Nakamura , Owari (western part of current Aichi) and promoted himself from a servant of Oda Nobunaga to the Kampaku, chief advisor of the Emperor at that time.
His success was rare even in his time when the lower class's overthrow of the higher class was usual in samurai society. It was based on his wit, ability to take action and favour of his lord Oda Nobunaga. After being appointed as the Kampaku, he defeated the Hojos, one of the biggest daimyos and unified the whole country. After that, he killed his nephew and heir Hidetsugu and planned to attack Ming that brought him no advantage. In his later years, he made his second son Hideyori succeed the position of Kampaku but it had a big impact on the poliical situation.
In this drama, he is described as a man who is cheerful but half-crazy. He patrons Nobushige who is a hostage to the Toyotomis and trusts his wife Nei completely though he sometimes becomes coldly to rule the whole country.
