UESUGI Kagekatsu

UESUGI Kagekatsu is a nephew of Uesugi Kenshin (Nagao Kagetora).  Kenshin is one of famous samurais and remained faithful to his principle "gi" (義, justice). He inculcated it in his nephew and heir Kagekatsu who became to believe "gi" and decided not to do anything against it.

His "gi" and "ai" (愛) of Naoe Kanetsugu, his senior vassal - though the word means "love" in Japanese, Naoe's does not come from "love" in fact - are famous principles not only in the histroy of his first fief Echigo(current Niigata)but Japanese history also. The lord and his vassal ruled Echigo well though it got into financial trouble after the death of Kenshin. After the Siege of Odawara in 1590, Kagekatsu was granted Aizu (eastern part of current Fukushima) as a reward. But after the Battle of Sekigahara, his fief was diminished and he moved to Yonezawa (southern part of current Yamagata) for he took the side of Ishida Mitsunari.
In this drama, he is described as a mild mannered man and understands Nobushige well. However he has to deny his principle when he serves Toyotomi Hideyoshi for he was told not to support the Sanadas. He becomes very confused but is persuaded by Naoe Kanetsugu.
