NORIZUKI Gennnojō decides to take O-Tsuna to Awa because of the illness of Chie and the wound of Mankichi. O-Tsuna knows that he loves Chie but she wants to give her heart to him during the journey. And TABIKAWA Shūma cooperates with TAKEYA Sanminokyo FUJIWARA no Arimura and the samurais of Awa including TENDŌ Ikkaku and Ojūya Magobei to kill Gennnojō. And he tells Arimura that MATSUDAIRA Sakyōnosuke and TSUNEKI Kōzan take up their old positions as Kyoto Shoshidai and his yoriki. The information pleases Arimura.

MORI Yūnosuke tells Arimura that Takusuke told him that a woman accompanies Gennojō makes friends with O-Kura, dealer of indigo ball and mistress of Shikokuya. Yūnosuke plans to make somebody watch Shikokuya but Magobei insists to barge in on and threaten the wholesaler. However Shuma opposes it and says it will profit them if Gennojō takes a boat for Awa, they profit most from it. Shūma insinuates himself into the favour of Arimura but Ikkaku doesn't mind it and tells Magobei that he will cooperate with even Yama, the King of Hell if he can kill Gennojō. At the same time, Gennojō meets Kōzan.

Kōzan says the existence of Naruhto Hichō derails the lives of people such as Yoami and Gennojō. Gennojō thanks him for sheltering Chie and Mankichi and Kōzan gives a hand for him because he has a connection to Shikokuya. At his residence, Mankichi is surprised at the fact that O-Tsuna is a half sister of Chie. He tells her who compares the birthmarks of Chie and her own not to love Gennojō deeply. O-Yone also goes to Awa but Yunosuke tries to keep it secret and he gives Takusuke hush money. She is ashamed that he knows her love for Gennojō and she wishes to die but Takusuke says he will keep quiet.

Kōzan sees Arimura enter Shikokuya. And Shinkichi, a salesclerk asks O-Kura not to stay in Osaka because he intends to manege the secret journey of Gennojo and O-tsuna at his own direction. The boat will be inspected severely at Mizumibansho, a guard house near the residence of Tokushima domain. Arimura stays in Shikokuya until the departure. In the residence of Kozan, Mankichi is treated by HIRAGA Gennai. Gennnojō plans to leave him for Chie in case she recovers consciousness. Kōzan says that the necessary things for the journey is prepared in the toma-bune by Shikokuya. Gennnojō expresses his thanks but Gennai says it's foolish and tells him not to risk his life to such a thing.

A stroller who formerly was a samurai called Sakurama and a woman visits Shikokuya. But they are Gennojō and O-Tsuna in reality. While they talk with Shinkichi in Shikokuya, Gennojō who senses someone hiding under the floor and stabs him. The man is Shuma's follower and tells him "back room" and "tsudura"(a kind of chest) and dies. Then Shuma steals into Shikokuya by himself and sees the chests are being carried out. O-Kura guides Arimura to the landing place and make efforts not to Gennnojō and O-Tsuna come across him. At that moment, a man who wears a braided straw hat slashes the ronins, followers of Ikkaku who chase him and escape. Ikkaku takes it for granted that Gennojō did it though the man with the hat is Kōzan.

Takusuke and O-Yone are in the waiting place for the boat. Takusuke behaves immorally to O-Yone and killed by Gennojo who hides himself in a chest of Shikokuya. He hides his body and O-Yone in the chests and they changes their clothes to theirs to pretend to be Takusuke and O-Yone. On their way to the landing place, they are stopped by Arimura. But Yūnosuke keeps their boarding secret (*), they are told to hurry up so they can get over the difficulty. Then Shūma comes and tells Arimura that the chests are loaded and a samurai with the hat threw them into confusion. O-kura feels uneasy with the words.

Chie recovers consciousness and goes out to catch Gennojō but it's too late. She cries out and is consoled by Kōzan while O-Kura pray for the safety of Gennojo and O-Tsuna. The boat approaches the guard house and Arimura asks what are the contents of the chests but Matsubei, the boatman will not answer him.Then he asks Shinkichi but he shows him the family crest of the Umetani Family, an aristocrat. He says it's the gift of the Umetani Family so he cannot open them. Arimura suspects them and makes Ikkaku, Shūma and Magobei pierce them with their swords. As the blood flows out, Arimura thinks that Gennnojō dies and orders his followers carry them to the residence of Tokushima domain. But Arimura, Yūnosuke and Ikkaku are surprised that there are the bodies of O-Yone and Takusuke in them when the lids are lifted.

O-Yone meets them near the toma-bune and tells Gennojo that her days are numbered so she does everything she can for him. Gennojō leaves his seat and O-Tsuma follows him. He tells her that he will be a brute as feared but she says he should not make the decision of O-Yone ineffective. Then there appears Shūma and Magobei who mark them. As the boat passes the Naruto channel and Magobei says here is the place of death for Gennojo and urges O-Tsuna to which side she should take. O-Tsuna tries to fire her pistol but taken away by Shūma. Gennojō sees it impossible to cross swords with them there, he tells O-Tsuna to be determined and they jump into the sea.
