Kumakichi is a manseervant of the Saigō Family. His father Kumajirō also served them. He called himself NAGATA Kumakichi after the Meiji Restoration (*).
He served the Saigō Family and accompanied Saigō Takamori (Kichinosuke) when he became a councilor of the new government after the Meiji Restoration. He was in charge of doing chores there and accompanied him also when he retired and returned to Kagoshima. During the Satsuma Rebellion, he surrendered to the government forces and after that he served Tsugumichi (Shingo, one of the younger brothers of Kichinosuke). He was beloved by the members of the family and Tsugumichi grieved him when he dies in 1900.
In this series, he is a fat and good-natured man who not only does chores but also goes hunting with Kichinocuke who is kind to him and his relatives. He is received as one of the family.
(*) In former times, common people such as farmers, artisans and merchants could not use their surnames officially.
