He was the 13th shogun in Edo period. He was the heir of TOKUGAWA Ieyoshi and a husband of Tenshō-in (Atsu hime).
He was born in 1824. Though Ieyoshi had many children, only he grew up to be a man but he had a weak condition. Besides he was said to have been stupid after the Meiji Restoration but those who served him directly denied it. However, he was afraid of strangers and always depended on his nurse Utahashi. One of the reasons of this was a sense of inferiority about his appearance caused by smallpox (*). Anyway it was true that he could not control his government as shogun. On the other hand, he was good at cooking.
He died of heart-failure from beriberi. When he was on the danger list, his mother Honju-in could not trust his doctors of traditional Chinese medicine (kanpō-i) and it enabled ranpō-i, doctors who studied Western medicine to serve him and the shoguns who succeeded him.
He married three women but two of them died before him. Tsnshō-in was his third wife but they had no children and Tokugawa Yoshitomi (Iemochi) became next shogun. Though HITOTSUBASHI Yoshinobu was the favourite to succeed him also, Iesada disliked him.
In this series, he is described as a dull and feeble man but he is talented in painting. His mother Honju-in plans to make him choose his wife and he chooses Atsu hime.
(*) At that time, the vaccination against smallpox didn't become popular in Edo because of the opposition of the doctors of Chinese medicine.
