He was born as son of ITAGAKI Nobuyasu, vassal of the Takedas and served both TAKEDA Nobutora and his son Harunobu (Shingen). He was one of the Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen.
After Nobutora was exiled to Suruga, he supported his lord Harunobu with AMARI Torayasu. In 1542, Harunobu schemed to kill SUWA Yorishige who ruled Suwa, a part of Shinano. But his distant relative TAKATO Yoritsugu planned to succeed Yorishige and was beaten by him dispatched by Harunobu. Then he kept Uehara Castle in Suwa and ruled the area.
He continued conquering Shinano by order of Harunobu and beat a local ruler KASAHARA Kiyoshige at Shige Castle and defeated him and his ally UESIGI Norimasa, Kanrei (*) of Kanto region at the Battle of Otaihara (Odaihara). But he was killed in the Battle of Uedahara in 1548. His family was extinct after that but was retrieved in 1558.
In this series, he is described as moriyaku (tutor or adviser) of Harunobu and introduces Kansuke to Harunobu. He often talks with Kansuke and tries to admonish Harunobu for his self-conceit. After the battle of Uedahara, Harunobu deeply regrets his death.
(*) Kanrei was one of the officials who administrated Kanto area in Eastern Japan.
