KOTEN Soken was a priest from the 16th century to the 17th century. He succeeded the post of high priest of Ryotanji Temple from NANKEI Zuimon and established the temple of the same name in Hikone where the Ii clan ruled after the Battle of Sekigahara.
As he was an expert with naginata (Japanese halberd), he served Ii Naomasa, son of Naochika and participated in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584. In the Battle, he defeated the armies of IKEDA Tsuneoki and MORI Nagayoshi. (*)
In this drama, he is called "Koten" and a priest who educates Jiro Hoshi, Naochika and Masatsugu in their childhood and young monks. As being mild-mannered and learned scholar, he is an adviser for his mentor Nankei.
(*)In former times, some influential temples trained their monks to take part in the battles. They were called sohei (monk soldier).
