SANADA Nobushige was a samurai from the 16th century to the 17th century. He was born as second son of SANADA Masayuki, one of local lords of Shinano (current Nagano) who served the Takedas and then the Odas. After the fall if the Odas, Masayuki tried to protect his fief by forming schemes and finally Nobushige was sent to the Uesugis as hostage. Later Nobushige became to serve TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi as one of his guards and Masayuki was promoted to daimyo. His eldest son Nobuyuki was promoted also and ruled Numata in Kozuke, current Gunma.


After the death of Hideyoshi, the vassals of the Toyotomis were divided and they entered upon a war. At that time, Masayuki and Nobushige decided to take the side of ISHIDA Mitsunari and Nobuyuki took the Tokugawa's side with the purpose of surviving the Sanadas. Ishida's armies were defated at the Battle of Sekigahara and Masayuki, Nobushige and their families and vassals were forced to leave Shinano and exiled to Kudoyama, near Koya-san. Masayuki died there in 1610 and in 1614, Nobuyuki was asked to join the Siege of Osaka, a series of battles between the Toyotomis and the Tokugawas. In the siege, the ronins, most of whom were former vassals and daimyos who joined the Battle of Sekigahara. They protected the Toyotomis and Osaka Castle well but TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and his allies triumphed over the Toyotomis in May, 1615 and he died. Nobushige bacame to be known as SAMADA Yukimura in popular culture in Edo Period.


In this drama, he is a main character and described as a witty man. He is irritated and sometimes cheered up by his childhood friend Kiri, daughter of TAKANASHI Naiki who served Masayuki. Besides he is liked by UESUGI Kagekatsu and feared by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the final episode, He joins the Summer Campaign of Osaka but his death was not described and it disappointed some viewers.
