ベイカー寮221B／Baker House 221B

「困った校長先生の冒険」の原作は『ボヘミアの醜聞』です。オルムシュタイン校長は221Bを訪れ、ホームズとワトソンに不倫関係について話し合います。ホームズは冷静にその話を聞きますが、ワトソンは驚いて（故意に？）「奥さんがいるのにですか」と叫びます。この時点では、ホームズはワトソンに比べると大人びて見えます。

しかし仮病を使って保健室に行き、アドラー先生と話をするホームズはどぎまぎしています。この中では、原作やドラマ同様に、彼女はホームズを出し抜きますが、それに加えて、仮病と知っていて薬を飲ませたり、絵をほめてくれたホームズに、恋人のゴドフリー・ノートンの目前で抱きついたりします。

偽の火事を起こした後、アドラー先生はホームズに、「いつも自分が一番賢いと思わないことね」と言います。アイリーン・アドラーは唯一、ホームズと対等に渉りあえる女性ですが、この第1シリーズでは15歳のホームズ相手に、すべての点で優っている感じです。最終回で彼を見送る中にアドラー先生がいなかったのは、それも一因なのかもしれません。

"The Adventure of the Headmaster with Trouble"is based on "A Scandal in Bohemia". Headmaster Ormstein visits 221B and tells Holmes and Watson about his illicit love affair. Holmes listens to it calmly but Watson cries out"But you are married, sir" in surprise (intentionally?). At this point, Holmes looks like an adult in comparison with Watson.

However he gets nervous when he goes to nurse's office and talks with Irene Adler. In the episode, she outwits Holmes in reasoning as in the canon and dramas. Besides she makes him take medicine though she knows his illness is fake and hugs him who appreciates her picture in front of her lover Godfrey Norton.

After the false fire, she tells him not to think that he outdoes others in reasoning. Irene Adler is the only woman who can compete equally to him but it seems she exceeds fifteen-year-old Holmes in all in the first series. It may be one of the reasons why she is not among those who send off Holmes in the final episode.

ある晩、アイマスクをつけた男性が221Bを訪ねて来て、写真を取り返してくれと依頼した。この人物はオルムシュタイン校長で、保健教諭のアイリーン・アドラー先生と不倫関係にあり、アドラー先生は2人が写っているこの写真を、奥さんに送りつけると言って校長先生を脅していた。ホームズは依頼を引き受け、翌日仮病を使って保健室に行き、アドラー先生の行動を観察したが、彼女の存在に多少どぎまぎしていた。その後男性の声が聞こえ、ホームズはそれが美術のゴドフリー・ノートン先生であるとわかる。2人は一緒に校長先生の似顔絵を描いていた。

One night a man with eye mask visits 221B and requests Holmes to take back his photo. He is Headmaster Ormstein who has adulterous relationship with Irene Adler who threatens him by sending it she and Ormstein are in to his wife. Holmes accepts it and he pretends to be ill and goes to nurse's office on the following day. He observes the behaviour of Irene Adler who nurses him but gets nervous a bit in her presence. After that, he hears a man's voice and finds it's Godfrey Norton who teaches art. He and Miss Adler draw portraits of Ormstein together.


Holmes who returns to 221B tells what happened in nurse's office and asserts that Irene and Norton are going together. He also tells his roommate to make her panic by a false fire and take back the photo. He visits nurse's office again and signals Watson to set fire to a smoke candle.Then Holmes approaches a box that she glances at and tries to take it away but Irene tells him not only to look but observe it. There is a photo at the bottom of the box indeed but not the one he searches. It is the photo of her and Norton. She tells Holmes that she sees through everything and plans to marry Norton.

Finally Holmes and Watson search the room of the Headmaster and Holmes finds the photo behind a photo of Ormstein's family. He is given it as a token of Ormstein's gratitude. Later He cuts the part of Irene from the photo and sticks it in a drawer. 

3月15日、「消えたボーイフレンドの冒険」の再放送が終わった後に、続編が放送されることがツイートされ、フェイスブック、公式サイトでも発表されています。嬉しい。

Broadcast of new episodes was twittered and announced both on facebook and official website after rebroadcast of "The Adventure of the Missing Boyfriend" yesterday. It makes me happy.

昨日の分で、ピノキオとホームズの関係について書きました。もちろん、この両者には大きな違いもあります。『ピノキオの冒険』はロードムービーのような作品で、ピノキオは自分が出会う様々な人々や動物に影響を受けます。方やホームズは、一種の閉鎖的な空間であるビートン校の探偵であり、221Bを拠点に捜査を行います。さらに、ピノキオの冒険にはワトソンに相当する存在の人物はいません。

かいつまんでいえば、両者の最大の共通点は、一人の少年が、実の母親でない、能力的にも自分より優れた女性に強い影響を受けているという点です。そしてピノキオは妖精（仙女）を母親とみなし、よりどころとしますが、ホームズはアイリーンを女性とみなし、第1シリーズの最終回では「淡い恋心の発露」（メモリアルブック23ページ）を感じさせます。



I wrote about the relations between Pinocchio and young Holmes yesterday. Needless to say, there is a big difference between them also. "The Adventures of Pinocchio" is a novel like road film and the main character is influenced by various people or animals he meets. On the other hand, Holmes is a detective in Beeton School, a kind of enclosed space and he does investigation based in 221B. Besides there is no existence that corresponds to Watson in "The Adventures of Pinocchio".

To sum up, the biggest point in common between them is that a boy is strongly influenced by adult woman who is not his real mother and has ability superior to him. And Pinocchio loves the Fairy as his mother and depends on her while Holmes is conscious of Irene as a woman and the awakening of love appears in the final episode of the series 1.

以前「15歳のホームズ」で、ホームズとピノキオの関連性について書いたことがありました。『ピノキオの冒険』の日本語版を読むと、実際いくつかの共通点が感じられます。まず、主人公が2人ともいわゆる問題児です。ホームズは寄宿学校の生徒で、ピノキオよりも年上で、いつもは大人びた行動を取るにもかかわらず、時々子供じみた振る舞いをします。

ピノキオに対する妖精（仙女）の立場は、ホームズに対してのアイリーン・アドラーのそれに該当します。妖精は必ずしもピノキオを気遣っているわけではないし、保健教諭のアイリーンは、ハドソン夫人ほどホームズに献身的ではありません。2人の少年と「特別な女性」の関係は、我々が考えるよりも冷淡です。しかし妖精もアイリーンも、彼らのことを心に留め置いてはいます。

この本の後書きで、翻訳者の大岡玲氏は、ピノキオが本物の少年に生まれ変わったことは、もはや彼が受け身かつ人生経験のない子供ではなく、自由を享受しながらも、すべてに責任を取って思慮深い少年に変化することだと書いています。ホームズがまたビートン校に戻った場合、彼は変化を遂げているのでしょうか？

そして『ピノキオの冒険』も『シャーロック・ホームズ』も、いったん終了しながら、読者の要望で続編が書かれたということを付け加えたいと思います。

べインズはクーパー寮の生徒で、オルムシュタイン校長の甥であり、いつもペロペロ（キャンディー）を持っています。『ウィステリア荘』に出て来る警部がモデルで、彼の最初の登場回は、この作品が原作の「生真面目な証人の冒険」です。この時にべインズは、ホームズに推理で挑戦しています。ホームズを自分のライバルとみなしており、「ホームズさんを尊敬しています」が口癖で、「バスカーヴィル君と犬の冒険」で、ホームズに人形の暗号を解くようにしむけたのも彼です。ついでながら、ホームズの推理のイメージはCGで表わされますが、べインズのイメージは紙芝居で表現されます。べインズがホームズよりやや劣るということでしょうか？彼は人形文字を使ってこんなことを書いていたのですが。

何だか意味不明なタイトルですみません。まず大河ドラマですが、今年の大河『花燃ゆ』の舞台は長州です。長州といえば藩主は毛利家なのですが、この毛利家はかつては中国地方の大大名であり、そのため幕末のみならず、戦国時代が舞台の大河にも多く登場します。昨年の『軍師官兵衛』にも毛利輝元やその縁戚に当たる吉川元春、小早川隆景が登場していました－尤も、毛利勢で一番目立っていたのは安国寺恵瓊でしたが。

毛利家を中国地方随一の大名にしたのは、いわずとしれた毛利元就です。この元就の長男が隆元です。かなり前の大河『毛利元就』に登場していたので、覚えておられる方も多いかもしれません。『花燃ゆ』の主人公の一人（といっていい）吉田松陰が著書『常永公伝』で、この隆元のことを、品行方正で勇敢であり、慈しみ深く、平重盛のような人物であると評しています。この隆元も、平重盛も、偉大な父親の存在というプレッシャーに耐えながら、自分の成すべきことを成し遂げた人物でした。二人とも、四十そこそこで父親に先立っている点も共通しています。

ところで、『毛利元就』で隆元を演じたのは、上川隆也さんでした。この人は他にも『功名が辻』で、夫人の千代に支えられながら出世を重ねて行く、生真面目な武将山内一豊の役を演じています。『平清盛』は生憎観ていないので何とも言えませんが、これもかなり律義で芯を通す人物を演じたようです。この上川さんが、来年の大河『真田丸』の真田信幸（信之）役という声が上がっているようです。この信幸は主人公で、堺雅人さん演じる真田幸村（信繁）のお兄さんで、過去に放送された『真田太平記』では、これまた実直で律義で、しかし戦略に長けた知将として描かれていました。上川さんはこういうのが当たり役なのかもしれません。

そして、この『真田丸』の脚本が三谷幸喜さんです。三谷さんは、もちろん『人形劇シャーロックホームズ』、パペットホームズの脚本も担当しています。大河がどのような内容になるかは、もちろんまだ知るすべもありませんが、どこかにパペットホームズの雰囲気が加味されると面白いかもと、勝手な想像をしています。もちろん大河の脚色は、時間も手間もかかるのは重々承知ですが、今夏放送予定のパペットホームズの、その後の新シリーズも手掛けていただきたいと思います。

れすとら様の「ホームズのピロピロ笛」へのコメントによると、正典のホームズは4本パイプを持っています。ホームズはキャラバッシュ型の物を愛用していたと考えられていますが、このタイプは1890年代のイギリスには存在しませんでした。当時は、荒れ地に生える灌木の根瘤で作られる、ブライヤーが一般的でした。

では、なぜキャラバッシュがホームズを象徴するパイプになったのか。これは正典が舞台化された時に、観客にホームズがパイプを持っているのがわかるよう、大きめのパイプを使ったのです。ホームズがパイプを吸ったり吐いたりを繰り返すことにより雑念が払われ、すべてを思索的に考えることが可能になるといわれています。



According to Lestra's comment to "Homes' party horns", Sherlock Holmes in the canon has four pipes.Though he is considered to use a calabash pipe regularly, this type did not exist in Britain in the 1890s. At that time, briar pipe that is made of root nodule of a shrub that grows on sterile land was popular.

Why did calabash pipe become to symbolise Holmes, then? The reason is that the big size one was used to make audience clearly understand that he has a pipe when the canon was adapted to play. And it is said that repeating smoking and puffing puts anything else out of his mind and enables him think everything meditatively.
