ベイカー寮221B／Baker House 221B

ハドソン夫人は、ベイカー寮の寮母です。ホームズとワトソンには特に親切で、ホームズのことをファーストネームで「シャーロック」と呼んでいます。歌うこととクッキー作りが大好きで、生徒たちにお手製クッキーを振舞いますが、ホームズは食べようとしません。ハドソン夫人のエプロンに猫の毛がついているのがその理由です。ホームズによれば、彼女は猫と遊んだ後手を洗うような人ではないからです。また「愉快な四人組の冒険」では、2人に歌を聞かせるために、郵便配達人と歌いながら221Bに入って来るというおちゃめなところもありますが、その郵便配達人はこのエピソードでかなり重要な人物です。一方で、「まだらの紐の冒険」では、夜に校内で大きな蛇を見て驚き、221Bに駆け込みます。ちょっと騒々しいけど、とても気のいい寮母さんです。

Mrs. Hudson is a housemother of Baker House. She is particularly kind to Holmes and Watson and calls Holmes by his given name "Sherlock". She loves singing and baking cookies and serves her cookies to pupils but Holmes won't eat them for he finds cat hair on her apron. He says that she never washes her hands after playing with a cat. And she is mischievous enough to enter 221B while singing with a mailman, who is a key person in the episode to make Holmes and Watson listen to their songs. On the other hand, she is surprised with a big snake in the school one night and rushes into the room. Though being noisy a bit, she is a good-natured housemother.

既に3回放送されていますが、書くのは今回が初めてです。
吉田松陰の妹、文の目を通して幕末の青春群像を描くドラマですが、この文がどのような人物であったかがあまり知られていないとかで、史実に沿うと言うよりは、制作サイドによって人物設定がなされている部分が大きいようです。今まで見た感じでは、松陰と小田村伊之助が実質的な主人公で、それに文が準主役的に絡んでいる印象ですが、さて今後どうなるのでしょうか。しかし松陰が色々騒ぎを起こしている感がありますね。無論これは、彼の信条に従ったものでしょうが、その信条の多くがその当時は国禁であるわけです。最終的に密航を企てて、アメリカの軍艦ポーハタン号への乗船を強行し、このため罪人となって蟄居を命じられるわけですが、しかしそれが松下村塾で多くの青年をはぐくむことになり、彼らが明治の重鎮となって行くわけなのですが。
第3回と第4回とで、そのポーハタン号への乗船、いわゆる下田踏海が描かれるわけですが、しかし大それたことをやったものです。そうでもしないと何もできないという、一種の使命感があったのでしょう。

私は子供の頃、ホームズの子供向け翻案を読んでいました。でもその一方で、当時はアルセーヌ・ルパンに夢中でした。ルパンの方がホームズよりかっこいい、女性に優しい、そして、ガニマール警部を手玉に取る辺りが何とも痛快だったからです。しかしその後、ホームズの渋さと、事件を根気強く調べて行く姿勢が好ましく思えてきました。そしてグラナダ版『シャーロック・ホームズの冒険』の放送が、大人向けのホームズの作品を読むきっかけになりました。

このグラナダ版、『緋色の研究』が作られていないのが残念です。しかしシドニー・パジェットのイラストを思わせるホームズ及びワトソンと、その舞台となるヴィクトリア朝のロンドンは印象的です。もちろん、ホームズの奇人ぶりも細部まで描かれています。このシリーズを観るまで、ホームズは温厚な紳士と思っていたのですが、それはワトソンの方でした。ワトソンもこの作品ではきちんと描かれていましたね。

このグラナダ版は今も、NHKBSやCSで放送されているので観ています。加えて『シャーロック』、そして人形劇も観ていますが、残念ながら映画をあまり観ていません。私が観た数少ないホームズ映画に、『ヤング・シャーロック－ピラミッドの謎』というのがあります。グラナダ版が放送されていた時期に公開された映画でした。人形劇と同じ十代のホームズとワトソンという発想が新鮮に感じられました。しかし人形劇とは違い、学校を舞台にした探偵ドラマではなく、ホームズとワトソンの青春時代の思い出になっています。少年ワトソンが馬車の中で大好物のカスタードパイ、あるいはカスタードタルトを食べていたのを覚えています。

I read a story of Sherlock Holmes for children in my childhood. On the other hand, I was attracted by the series of by Arsene Lupin at that time for he is more stylish than Holmes, kind to women and leads Ganimard around by the nose that made me feel so exciting. Laer I became to like Holmes who is sober but eccentric and investigates any case persistently. And the broadcast of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" in Japan gave me a chance of reading Japanese translation of the canon of Sherlock Holmes that intended for adults.

It is regrettable that "A Study in Scarlet" is not dramatised in the Granada TV Series. But it is impressive that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson recalls the illustrtion by Sidney Paget and the dignity of London in Victorian age in which it is set. And the eccentricity of Holmes is described in details. Until then I thought him to be a good-natured gentleman but found it is Watson who has such personarity. The descriprion of Dr. Watson is also good in the series.

I still enjoy the series that is still broadcast by NHK BS and a CS station. Besides I watch "Sherlock" and the NHK puppetry but watched very few films regerttably."Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear" is one of such films. It was released when "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" was broadcast in Japan. In it, Holmes and Watson are pupils of a boarding school as well as them in the puppetry and I felt novel about the idea. However unlike the puppetry, it is not a detective drama set in the school but is a memory of teenaga days of Holmes and Watson. I remember young Watson eats his favourite custard pie or tart in a carriage in the film.

ジョン・H・ワトソンも15歳ですが、原作や他の映画あるいはドラマ同様、ホームズとは違う性格です。実直で温厚で、時に情熱的になる点はホームズと対照的です。ワトソンがビートン校に入学した時、もしホームズに別のルームメイトがいたら、ワトソンの人生はかなり違ったものになったでしょう。オーストラリアにいた時は、有力者の息子が肌の色の違う生徒をいじめたため、そのいじめた生徒を殴ったことがありました。しかしそのことと転校は無関係とワトソンは言います。ラグビーを引退したとはいえ、時間があればボールを磨いています。ワトソンは風変わりなホームズを調査のみならず、日常生活でも支えています。その一方で、15歳の少年らしく女の子にも関心があり、ホームズと共にメアリー・モースタンに会った後は、いつも通りにシャボン玉の研究を続けるホームズに、「君は女の子を好きになったことはないの？」と問いただします。

John H. Watson is fifteen-year-old also but his character is much different from Holmes as he is in the canon and other films or dramas. He is scrupulous, gentle and sometimes becomes passionate in contrast to his roomamate. If Holmes had another roommate when he entered Beeton School, his life would be so changed. When he was in Australia, he hit a son of a man of influence who teased someone whose skin color is different from his own. But Watson says it's not related to changing his school. Though retiring from rugby, he polishes his oval ball when he has time. He supports Holmes not only in his investigation but in his daily life also. As is usual with 15-year-old boy, he takes an interest in girls on the other hand. After they met Mary Morstan, Watson asks Holmes "Haven't you ever loved a girl?" for he continues studying soap bubbles as usual.

この人形劇のホームズは15歳の、神経質な美少年です。原作のホームズの風変わりな部分、好奇心の強いところが、思春期の少年の特徴として描かれています。しかも学校が舞台なので、殺人もなければ銃を撃つこともなく、そのため推理の面白さが追求されています。また、動物たちや彼らの言葉を理解する生徒が調査に協力するため、ファンタジーと捉えることもできます。

ホームズは元々恋愛には縁のない存在とされますが、この少年ホームズは、美しくて優しく、頭の切れる保健のアイリーン・アドラー先生にはいくらかの関心があるようです。アドラー先生は、時折ホームズの鼻の頭を指でぴんと弾きます。このホームズはピノキオにちょっと似ていて、そのためホームズとアドラー先生の2人は、ピノキオと妖精（仙女）を思い起こさせます。

Sherlock Holmes is a nervous, good-looking fifteen-year-old boy in this series. The eccentricity and curiosity of Holmes in the canon are descibed as characteristics of boy at puberty. As it is set in the school, there's no murder and no guns. So the puppetry pursues the interest of reasoning iｔself. And it is considered to be a kind of fantasy also for animals and a pupil who undesrstands their language are included in those who support him.

Though he is said to be unrelated to love, the boy seems to have some interests in Irene Adler, an elegant, sweet and intelligent school nurse who occasionally flips the head of his nose with her fingers. As this Holmes looks like Pinocchio a bit, he and Miss Adler remind me of the marionette and fairy.

ジョン・H・ワトソンはオーストラリアからの転校生で医師の父親がいます。それまでのホームズのルームメイトは、彼の風変わりな振る舞いのために次々ノイローゼになり、ワトソンが期せずして221Bの住人となったのでした。ワトソンは、元々ラグビーをやっていましたが、左脚のけがでプレイを中断せざるを得なくなり、それに代わる物が当初は見つかりませんでした。しかし、ホームズとレストレードの調査に加わるようになり、1週間以内に退学することになったジェファーソン・ホープを励ますことで、失意から立ち直ります。ホームズの調査について記事を書き、学校の壁新聞にそれを寄稿することが、ワトソンの新しい目標となったのです。

John H. Watson is a transfer from Australia and doctor's son. He happens to become to live in the 221B for former roommates of Holmes suffered nervous breakdown in succession because of his strange behaviour. Watson formerly played rugby but the injury of his left leg forced him to retire from the game.　He could not find something replaces rugby at first but becomes to take part in the search of Holmes and Lestrade and gets over his frustration by encouraging Jefferson Hope, who is to leave school within a week. He finds a new purpose in his life. It's writing articles about his roommate's investigation and contributing them to the school's wall newspaper.

この人形劇では、ホームズは15歳でベイカー寮の221Bの部屋に住んでいます。大人のホームズの思い出ではなく、学校を舞台にした探偵物語になっています。学校内で起こる事件やトラブルを、ホームズが依頼されて解決するもので、依頼人の多くは生徒ですが、先生が依頼しに来ることもあります。原作ではホームズは、ワトソンやレストレードと共に行動することが多いのですが、この中でも、同室のワトソンや、生活委員のレストレードと共に行動します。生活委員とは、生徒たちに校内で規律を守らせる役割の組織です。ホームズの学業成績、特に文学、哲学、天文学はふるいません。授業中は居眠りをしており、しかも学校内のトラブルに首を突っ込みます。先生たちからはよく思われていませんが、保健のアイリーン・アドラー先生は彼の実力を認めています。また、寮母のハドソン夫人は、学校内で唯一彼のことをファーストネームでシャーロックと呼び、彼とワトソンにはとても親切です。

In this puppetry, sherlock Holmes is a fifteen-year-old pupil who studies and lives in the room 221B of Baker House. This is not a momery of Holmes but a detective drama series set in a boarding school. Holmes is requested to solve affairs or troubles by pupils, sometimes teachers. As Holmes acts in concert with Dr. Watson and Inspector Lestrade in the canon, he is always with Watson and Lestrade, member of life-guidance committee that is in charge of making pupils keep discipline in the school. The school record of Holmes is poor especially in literature, philosophy and astronomy and he usually sleeps in class. In addition, he pries into the troubles in the school. Many teachers dislikes him but school nurse Irene Adler recognises his ability and housemother Mrs. Hudson. who calls him by his first name Sherlock is very kind to him and Watson.

「愉快な四人組の冒険」には、様々な要素が散りばめられています。ミュージカル仕立て（またはいくつかの曲が入ったドラマ）であり、特に四人編成のグループであることと、曲を巡ってのトラブルという点はビートルズを思い出します。また、ショルトー兄弟がスキャットで『ゴールデン・スランバーズ（子守歌）』を歌っていますが、これはポール・マッカートニーによってアレンジされ発表されています。何よりも、アーサーの顔立ちはポールに似ています。

また、効果音としてバッハの『トッカータとフーガニ短調』が登場しますし、ホームズが兄弟の部屋を捜査している時に「木を隠すなら森の中」というセリフが登場しますが、これは『ブラウン神父シリーズ』に登場する「葉を隠すなら森の中」を踏まえているようです。もちろん、「仕事が報酬です」は非常に有名な言葉ですね。

There are various elements in "The Adventure of the Cheerful Four". It's adapted as a musical (or drama with some songs) and especially the fact that the vocal group is formed by four pupils and the trouble over a song remind me of the Beatles. And the Sholto twins scat "Golden Slumbers" as cradle song that is arranged and announced by Paul MaCartney. Above all, Arthur resembles Paul.

Besides "Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565" is used as sound effect. And during the search in the twins' room, Holmes says "Where does a wise man hide a tree? In the forest." that may be based on "Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In the forest." from "The Innocence of Father Brown". Needless to say, Holmes' words "The work is my own reword" are so famous.

1月11日、トップリーグ最終節2試合観戦のため、レベルファイブスタジアムへ。
曇っていて風が冷たい日でしたが、こういう日こそラグビーがふさわしいのかもしれません。しかし出場した地元2チームのうち、1チームは負けて降格、もう1チームはやはり負けて入替戦と何とも残念な結果でした…。高校大会では地元優勝で盛り上がったのですけどね。
