Later he remembers that a local family gave him who is exhausted a glass of lemonade and a cinnamon roll. He returns to Japan and decides to clear his name next time. But the Olympics 1916 is canceled because of the WWI. He takes part in the Olympics 1920 in Antwerp but he cannot bring his ability into running. On the other hand, he marries Suya who loses her husband and then has a son. He tries to improve Japanese sports includes that of women and realises Hakone Ekiden.

Masaji Tabata

He was born in December 1898. He was a journalist and a coach of swimming.

After graduating Tokyo University, he became a staff of the Asahi Shimbun. He also coached swimming and held an important post in the Japan Amateur Athletic Association. In 1948, he was appointed to the President of the Japan Swimming Federation. As Japan could not take part in the 1948 Summer Olympics, the Japan Championship of swimming was held at the same time. It was planned by him. In the championship, Hironoshin Furuhata finished first in the 1,500 metre freestyle and it was the world record in reality. However it was not an official one because Japan was excluded from the FINA at that time.

On the following year, he made the federation join the FINA again and led the Japanese team both in the summer Olympics in 1952 and 1956. He then attempted hosting the Olympics in Tokyo and campaigned with Fred Isamu Wada, a Japanese-American businessman. When hosting the Olympics was decided, he was appointed to a secretary-general of the organising committee and was said to have appealed to the IOC to make women's volleyball become an official event.

However in the Asian Games was held in Indonesia 1962, the host country refused the participation of Taiwan and Israel so the IOC didn't approve of the Games as official one. Though he sent the Japanese team to Indonesia, he later took responsibility and resigned from his office.

From 1973 to 1977, he held the post of the President of the JOC.

He died in 1984.

Idaten Episode 6 O-Edo Nihonbashi (Nihonbashi, Edo)

After the qualification, Dai Nippon Taiiku Kyōkai (Japan Amateur Athletic Association) decides to send Japanese athletes to the Olympics 1912. On the other hand, Shisō tries to apologise Shinsaku Kurosawa, shopmaster of Harimaya for his impoliteness but he hesitates to enter his shop. Then Sei-san appears and lets him into the shop. Shinsaku improves the tabi and gives them to Shisō. He feels comfortable in them and find they are not easily torn. He goes out of the shop and begins running around his school.

However it is hard for the association to select the athletes who will be sent to Stockholm and the expense goes over the budget. Though Jigorō Kanō negotiates with the Ministry of Education, the officials insist that it doesn't need to make Yahiko Mishima, one of the favourites for the Olympics because he studies at Tokyo University at government expense. Jigorō decides to persuade Yahiko go to Sweden at his own expense as he is from a wealthy family. The association can send only two athletes so Isao Kani apologises to Jigorō for having used money to make a trophy for the qualification but Jigorō never minds it. And he calls Shisō to the principal's room.

いだてん6四三
Shisō (NAKAMURA Kankurō VI) keeps runnning

Shisō is told to take part in the Olympics 1912 but he says he doesn't want to do so. He doesn't know even the world record of marathon and he just wanted to join the qualifier to achieve good results from his effort. And the reason why he runs around the school is testing new tabi. First of all, he doesn't know about the Olympics and why the letters "OLYMPIC" are inscribed on the trophy. His words disappoints Jigorō so much. Though he shows Shisō the poster of the Olympics 1912 and tells him about the Rising-Sun flag in it, he is surprised with a naked man painted in it. Besides he asks Jigorō whether he should commit hara-kiri or not if he were to lose the race.

Then Jigorō asks Yahiko Mishima to take part in the Olympics but he refuses it because he is in the senior class and is warned by the Ministry of Education to avoid it. Jigorō thinks that he has no other choice but to send the athletes in the second or third places in the qualifier. And then the Xinhai Revolution breaks out in China so many Chinese students who study at the school with his recommendation become confused and attempt to return to their country. Jigorō restrains them from leaving Japan and bears their expense necessary for stay and studying. As a result, he borrows a big amount of money that is impossible for him to pay off until his death.

いだてん6嘉納と四三
Jigorō Kanō (KōjiYakusho, right) hugs Shisō

Shisō visits the principle's room to return the trophy. However Jigorō tells him that everybody expects him to take part in the Olympics and explains him about it. And he gives an example of the mission sent by the Tokugawa shogunate to the US to exchange instruments of ratification of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the US and Japan. He says the samurais with swords and kimonos might have been regarded so strange in the US and pioneers always have hard time. Shisō cannot make a decision at first but finally he accepts it. It makes Jigorō so happy and tells him not to receive financial help from the Ministry of Education but go to Stockholm at his expense so he will be free from mental pressure. But in fact, the financial situation of the association gets worse.

Shisō goes to the ground in Haneda. After the conversation with Jigorō, he was shown a world atlas and learned where Stockholm is located. And Isao tells him the expense costs 1.800 yen (*) at least. Shisō worries but at last he writes about it to his family. But he hesitates whether he posts it or not but at last drops it into a pillarbox when a son of Shinsaku clings to his hip. The voice of the primary school pupils in 1960 who study about the Olympics overlaps.

Kōzō Minobe (Mirai Moriyama, right) pulls a jinrikisha Tachibanaya Enkyō (Suzuki Matsuo) rides on

In 1960, Masaji Tabata who is a secretary-general of the organising committee of the Olympics 1964 sees a man who wears tabi runs from the car. The story of KOKONTEI Shinchō is broadcast on radio. Young Shinshō, Kōzō Minobe was told by TACHIBANAYA Enkyō who rides his jinrikisha to learn stories not by listening to. He tells that he should learn them by running around Tokyo to understand the feelings of the characters. So he tells his new pupil Gorin the same thing but Gorin prefers the story of Tokyo Olympics, a modern one than classical ones.

At the end of Meiji period, Kōzō runs from Asakusa tod Nihonbashi but he becomes to run from Asakusa to Shiba. Shisō who trains for the Olympics also runs from Ueno to Shibaand passes by Kōzo.

And Shisō's letter reaches his family.

He is hugged by Jogorō as soon as he reaches the goal and his dream from his childhood comes true now (***). It is unbelievable that he betters the world record and there are no problems in timekeeping and the distance. Though a stuff tries to make him drink water, he refuses it.

But Yahiko tells Jigorō that he will not join the Olympics and he and Tengu Club members will manage the race. He also says to him that Yatarō will not invest money. It shocks Jigorō. Though the money to send the athletes to the Olympics is raised, he is in low spirits and says there may be no Idaten whom he is searching for. On the other hand, Shisō falls down because of his training and concludes that he should not train himself recklessly.

Shinshō tells "Shibahama", a story about a man who loves drinking sake. However he is drunken also though he performs on the stage on the day. So his story digresses.
