Sego-don Omnibus 1

Chapter 1 Satsuma (1)

Saigō Kokichi is the eldest son of Saigo Kichibei who is a lower-class samurai of Satsuma domain. One day ARIMURA Shunsai, one of his friends proposed him and his friends to steal sweets from Iso Goten, a residence for the Shimazu clan. But they are found out by the guards and escape from there and then see an odd man standing on the top of the hill. His face is sooty because he secretly tests a gun there. They think that he is Tengu (long-nosed goblin) and try to run away from him but MURATA Shinpachi is caught. The "Tengu" tells them not to tell others about it and hands them some pieces of castilla, saying that it needs to confront the Tengus from the West. They enjoy eating castilla but Kokichi is attracted by the letters "Cangoxina" on the paper that wraps the castilla.

There is an odd man who is SHIMAZU Nariakira (Ken Watanabe) in fact

Kokichi grows up and changes his name into Kichinosuke. He is a man who tries to save the poor and saves a girl called Fuki who is going to sell herself because of her parent's debt. Kichinosuke gives duns all of his stipend but at last Fuki leaves Satsuma. As the Saigo family is in a penurious manner so Kichibei and Kichinosuke borrows money. Then they buy rice with it and give some bags of rice to Ishi, relative of Kumakichi who serves the family.

AKAYAMA Yukiē who is one of the senior vassals of Satsuma domain hopes that Shimazu Nariakira will succeed Narioki. Nariakira is the heir of Narioki, lord of Satsuma domain but his concubine O-Yura strongly opposes it and she is said to have cursed Nariaki's children who dies young. At last the samurais who support Nariakira are arrested and executed or exiled. OKUBO Jiemon, father of Kichinosuke's old friend Shōsuke are exiled and Yukiē is ordered to commit hara-kiri.

Kichinosuke tries to correct the unfair state in the domain because officers squeezes farmers who are few in number. So Kichinosuke makes appeals to ZUSHO Hirosato who is in charge of the economic reform to correct it but Hirosato refuses him. He sends many letters of petition to Nariakira and implores him to become next lord in them. He also sends Nariakira the kamishimo Yukiē wore when he committed hara-kiri. Nariakira and Narioki make a mockery of Russian roulette to decide who should be the lord and Nariakira finally becomes the new lord and returns to Satsuma.

One day a sumo tournament is held and Kichinosuke takes part in it on behalf of MURATA Shinpachi who has diarrhea. At the end of the tournament, Nariakira orders Kichinosuke who won the tournament to match with him and Kichinosuke wins. O-Ichi (Atsu hime), adopted daughter of Nariakira sees it. Then he is imprisoned because of the discourtesy to Nariakira but this is his artifice. In the prison, he sees a strange man.

About posting the entries on "Sego-don"

Though the broadcast of "Sego-don" finished, I will continue posting the entries on the series as I posted before. I plan to write about the omnibus broadcast on the 30th of December and rebroadcast on the 2nd of January 2019 first. It is edited to highlight the existence of SAIGŌ Kichinosuke (Takamori). And I need to say that it will influence posting the entries on "Idaten". Maybe I prefer "Sego-don" rather than "Idaten".

And the official website of "Sego-don" will be deleted on the 31st of January 2019. I think it's because of reducing server load as this kind of website has various contents. But deleting the website of previous Taiga Drama series in January is too early.

My Impressions on "Sego-don" 2

The life of SAIGŌ Kichinosuke (Takamori) was full of ups and downs. He who served SHIMAZU Nariakira and learned about the Western Powers from him. Then he became his pupil rather than his vassal and sacrificed himself for the lord of Satsuma. However he died suddenly when he was in Kyoto and he tried to follow him to the grave but was stopped by Gesshō. In the series, the scene is not described but he intends to save him from the execution in the Ansei Purge. But at last they are cornered and they committed suicide.

Though Kichinosuke was saved and was exiled to Amami Oshima and met Aikana. they had two children one of whom was Kikujirō but Kichinosuke returned to Satsuma. After that he was exiled again and looked death in the face there. The experience matured him and then he decided to overthrow the shogunate and met some great figures such as KATSU Kaishū, SAKAMOTO Ryōma and IWAKURA Tomomi and they influenced him so much. At last he overthrew the shogunate and became one of those who realised the Meiji Restoration but he was not the man who was well adapted to the government.

Miho Nakazono who writes the script of the series says in a guidebook of "Segodon" that she tries to make some characters be tossed about the storms in the life and become strong-minded and so is Kichinosuke. As I write in "My Impressions on Segoi-don 1", he is not described as a man who is very charismatic and has a thought strongly based on royalism as he really was or is described in "Tobu ga Gotoku". But he is a mysterious man and there may be many ways of describing him. Yukinori Kida, one of the Senior Managing Directors of NHK says, "Though SAIGŌ Takamori was the main character in 'Tobu ga Gotoku' also, the way of describing him changes as time goes by". And I accept Nakazono's description. I stop posting the entries on "Sego-don" in English for a while but will post them related to the history of Kagoshima soon.

My Impressions on "Sego-don" 1

The series describes the life of SAIGŌ Kichinosuke, later Takamori. And it really satisfies me. Needless to say, there are many fictional parts like other Taiga Drama series. The series is characteralised by the description of Kichinosuke in his childhood. He is described as a young and inexperienced man in his early days and is confused with the death of SHIMAZU Nariakira who gave him an important position.

西郷どん1加治屋町の少年たち
Kichinosuke (right) in his childhood

SAIGŌ Takamori was originally a man who was one of the charismatic leaders in the Meiji Restoration and had a thought strongly influenced by royalism. However, describing a particular thought in TV dramas becomes to be restricted now because of political correctness. According to an article on the internet, the staff have to describe Kichinosuke as a man who supports the poor who gives them something without expecting anything to return unlike him in "Tobu ga Gotoku" that was broadcast in 1990.

西郷どん23吉之助
Kichinosuke who becomes an adult man

The article also says that Ryōhei Suzuki plays the role of Kichinosuke who is an ordinary man rather than a super star in Japanese history perfectly. Though some viewers are dissatisfied with it, this may be an another way of describing him. Personally I think he is a good actor and the very man for the role.

The Historical Background of Sego-don 20

The Death of ŌKUBO Toshimichi

On the 14th of May in 1878, ŌKUBO Toshimichi was assassinated by the former samurais from Ishikawa Prefecture who were dissatisfied with the government. He was on the way to the Imperial Palace in Akasaka, Tokyo and said to have been killed instantly on the spot. The assassins includes SHIMADA Ichirō were arrested and executed in July. It was said that Shimada lured other men into the assassination.

西郷どん47大久保利通
Though Toshimichi seizes the power as naimu-kyo, he is isolated

Toshimichi was isolated. He who parted from Saigō Takamori gave high priority to domestic administration and the encouragement of new industry and he was right in a sence. However he and Takamori shared the same kind of experience went their respective ways. His old friend left Tokyo and established Shigakkō in Kagoshima to train youths. He suspected that he promotes something that is against the government and sent NAKAHARA Nao-o to spy the School. And then they came into conflict each other.

西郷どん博覧会での大久保利通
He becomes confused at the National Industrial Fair because Takamori didn't surrender

In this series, Toshimichi orders to make the fellows of Takamori surrender instead of sparing Takamori's life (In reality, it was YAMAGATA Aritomo who ordered so). He hopes that he will surrender at heart but he never does so and dies in the battle. Toshimichi is shocked by the death of his second self and grieves at it. On the following year, he is killed before れrealising his ambition. Thinking of his recollection in which Kichinosuke (Takamori) runs to him to go to Higo together, he in the series is essential to Kichinocuke and Eita who plays the role of Toshimichi says in the official website,
"I feel like that the series describes the romantic drama of Takamori and Toshimichi".
He also says,
"He (Toshimichi) was hated but he was a great man".

The Historical Background of Sego-don 19

The Death of SAIGŌ Takamori

At last he dies in the last battle of the Satsuma Rebellion. It is commonly believed that he who goes out of the cave is wounded by a bullet. Then he decides to commit hara-kiri and says to BEPPU Shinsuke,
"Shin-don, mō kokoira de yoka".
(Shinsuke, it's time that I should die)
So Shinsuke helped his death (kaishaku) and killed himself also. The others charged the enemy and some of them are shot and the others commit suicide. But in the series, he doesn't do so and leads his fellows to attack his enemy. And he doesn't wears hakama that symbolises samurai but tucks up his kimono and wears momohiki, a close-fitting trousers for a farmer. The style proves his words that he wants to die as a farmer in the series.

西郷どん47持ち物を火にくべる西郷軍

After that he was regarded as a rebel and was pardoned when the Meiji Constitution was issued. Then two famous statues that memorises him were sculptured. One stands in Kagoshima and the other stands in Ueno, Tokyo. But the latter one dresses casually and is with a dog though a statue of a great man should be in full dress. In the episode 1 of the series, his wife Ito says
"This is not my husband. He was not a man like this. No!"
She wants to say that he is not a man who goes out with a dog in such a casual style. Then why such a statue was sculptured? Maybe there are many officials in the government who opposed pardoning him. However, the statue became to be popular among the people in Tokyo. And the statue in Kagoshima wears military uniform.

Again in 1904. Kikujirō says that his father respected heaven and loved people seeing his writing in the frame. He also says that he loved people at the sacrifice of his life and that's why others loved or respected him.

Takamori's death becomes widely known. TOKUGAWA Yoshinobu learns it from Fuki at his residence. She says he is a true samurai so he couldn't betray his fellows though he says to himself why he didn't escape like him seeing his picture of an ox. It is rumoured that Takamori became a star and when someone joins his/her hands to the star, he/she will be happy. KATSU Kaishū who is in a restaurant of gyū-nabe (*) mutters,
"Sego-don, you became a star at last. I hope you will be on good terms with Ryōma".
The star is Mars that approaches the earth in reality. In Amami Oshima, Aikana sings a farewell song and in Tokyo, Jūdō eats eel with tears in his eyes. He builds a big residence with the intention of living together with Takamori and his family.

After that Ito puts Takamori's writing "Kei-ten, Ai-jin" on the fur rug he used. Then she talks to her family about what he said to her in Nobeoka. He didn't want to make his family hold their tongues because he was regarded as a rebel. And he hoped his children complete a new country and not to be ashamed of being the children of Saigō Takamori. Toratarō says that his father is worshiped by Saigō Star but Ito admonishes him he was not a man who liked to be worshiped but always got close to the weak and a man who was "futtoka" (daring) and passionate.

On the 14th of May in 1878, Tochimichi departs for the Imperial palace in Akasaka ignoring the needlass talk of IWAKURA Tomomi. But immedidaely after, some former samurais stop it showing Zan-kan-jō (a letter that denounced him) and pull put him from the carriage. Sego-don Episode 47 Kei-ten, Ai-jin (Respecting Heaven, Loving people) 2

This is the second part of the post about the episode 47. The third one will be posted tomorrow.

9 days have passed since the Government Army surrounded Mt. Shiroyama. At the headquarter of the army, some officers insist on launching an all-out attack against them but YAMAGATA Aritomo says,
"He considered all of us in the past and no one think that he was reduced to a rebel".
Then he adds it's so difficult to deal with his army in Mt. Shiroyama. KAWAJI Toshiyoshi suggests to Aritomo that he should press the commanders includes Takamori commit hara-kiri and release other soldiers instead. He attempets to make them die glorious deaths. But they receive a telegram from ŌKUBO Toshimichi and Jūdō who sees it make some soldiers deliver it to the Saigō army.

Takamori reads the letter that conveys the mesaage of the telegram. It says that the Government Army will attack Mt. shiroyama at 4 o'clock the next day but if the Saigō Army surrenders until 5:00 pm, he will be spare Takamori's life. Takamori says to himself that Ichizō is optimistic and showing him mercy will dug his own grave. Then he refuses the surrender though KIRINO Toshiaki asks him to survive and find an opportunity of going into action again. But Takamori tells him and others that he should die to stop other former samurais from starting a rebellion again.

Toshimichi explains about the exhibits from each prefecture to the foreign guests  at a national industrial fair but one prefecture submits nothing to the fair. It is Kagoshima. One of the guests raises a matter of the rebellion but he declares that it will end soon and any war will be expelled from Japan. Then he sees his pocket watch and confirms it's 4:30 pm. After a while he receives a message that Takamori did not surrender. He is confused about it but makes a speech in front of the guests. But when he mentions Japan established by samurais, he is at a loss for words and goes to the empty shelves for the exhibits from Kagoshima and removes the sign of "Kagoshima Prefecture" that annoys him at last. Also in Kagoshima, Aritomo and Jūdō confirm that it has turned 5.

Takamori tells his fellows that he is ready to die and he must do so to stop any war in Japan. Shinpachi believes that he doesn't want to survive alone. That night they have a drinking party and Takamori says he should prepare for another place of death for young soldiers (*) but some men includes Toshiaki say it's the very place to die because they can see Mt. sakurajima beyond. And Takamori tells shinpachi that his frock coat is very dirty and smells but he says it's so important for him. Actually, a photograph of a French women whom he get acquainted with in France is sewn to the inside of the coat. Sego-don Episode 47 Kei-ten, Ai-jin (Respecting Heaven, Loving people) 1

西郷どん47菊次郎
Saigō Kikujirō (Toshuyuki Nishida) talks about the Satuma Rebellion

In 1904, SAIGŌ Kikujirō makes his staff hang his father's writing "Kei-ten, Ai-jin" in a frame on the wall of his office. Then he began talking about the Satsuma Rebellion. He says,
"when a new era comes like a rolling wave, some people cannot ride on it. So my father Takamori hugged, swallowed and took the samurais who were left behind".

Kikujirō as mayor of Kyoto says that someone who accompanied Takamori at that time said,
"As time goes by, my affectionate feelings to him becomes stronger and I want to share his fate".

On the 17th of  August 1877, Takamori and his army depart Nobeoka and go toward to Kagoshima where they regard the place of their lkast battle. Then YAMAGATA Aritomo visits the field hospital and asks Ito where her husband departed for but she answers nothing. And Jūdō, Deputy Minister of the Government Army (the Imperial Army) who was permitted to go to Kyushu and arrives in Nobeoka.

Jūdō finds that the right leg of Kikujirō has lost and realises it's because of the shooting of the Government Army . He bows to her and apologises Ito but she tells him such a high-ranking officer of the Government Army should not behave so. Then Aritomo learns that the Saigō army departed for Kobayashi and even further south via Eno-dake, a mountain in the Kyushu Mountains. They arrive in Kagoshima and climb Mt. Shiroyama and at last they see Mt. Sakurajima. Takamori remembers that he inscribed the letters "Cangoxina" on a stone at the same place and finds it. It makes them feel nostalgic. They try to recover Kagoshima from the Government Army and fight well at first but the latest style of weapons make them retreat and hide in the mountains.

Ōkubo Toshimichi is busy with preparing for a national industrial fair. When he comes home, he learns that his house is Kagoshima was burned because of street fighting. He feels happy that his wife Masu and children now live with him in Tokyo but Masu suggests to him that he should go to Kagoshima and help his old friends in Mt. Shiroyama. He warns her to shut up. In Kagoshima, Ito, Kikujirō and Kumakichi return home with Jūdō. But Koto who learns that her son Sōsuke accompanied Takamori tells Jūdō to stop the war at once. She presses him hard and says,
"Are you going to kill our brother?"
KAWAGUCHI Seppō persuades her not to blame him because it's him who brought Ito, Kikujirō and Kumakichi to Kagoshima. Toratarō who hears his aunt's words asks Jūdō to beg for his father's life but Ito warns him.
"It's the shame of the Saigō family".
Jūdō leaves home with his attendants but immediately after Ito goes out of the house. He tells his sister-in-law that Takamori hides in Mt. Shiroyama. Ito is already prepared for the worst and tells him to do his duty because there may be a reason why he remains in the Government Army. She says,
"My husband will say the same thing as me to you".

Then Shinapachi takes off his hat and begs his fellows to throw money in it if the tune pleases them. Then he performs "La Marseillaise". They includes Takamori dance to it and many pieces of military currency called Saigō-fuda are thrown in the hat. And in Tokyo, Toshimichi pulls s drawer of his desk open to take a paper knife out and finds a small bag given by Takamori. In the bag, a piece of paper on which     "Cangoxina" is written. A Special Programme on "Segodon" Before the Final Episode

I write about the special programme broadcast on the 15th of December. Ryōhei Suzuki is famous for getting right into his role and shapes his body or gains his weight depending on his roles. After finishing shooting last October, he told the press that he had not played but lived the role of SAIGŌ Takamori for 16 months. It may be true that he turned completely into Takamori.

In the special programme, he says that he is so delighted with playing the fulfilling life of Takamori  and use the experience in the future. It proves that he played the role with enthusim. On the other hand, he feels bewildered in the location shooting in Amami Oshima and Okinoerabujima Island because the shooting schedule ignored the time series. He says that it's hard to consider how to play in such situation.

As in a special programme broadcast last April, he says that regards Ken Watanabe as much more experienced actor. And in last weekend's one, he says he can communicate by signaling Eita who plays the role of ŌKUBO Toshimichi with his eyes and acting with him is quite impressive. He may be a kind of buddy for him. This programme emphasises how he concentrates in playing rather than making of the series.

In the special, he goes to Kagoshima by the Kyushu Shinkansen to promote the series and chats with other actors in a green room and such behaviours are so heartwarming. On the other hand, he struggled with using Satsuma dialect. And Eita as Toshimichi also seems to identify himself with Toshimichi.

Toshimichi was a person who had a bruising experience and Eita says in that his hair turned gray and actually suffered stomachache as Toshimichi did in the special. In a guidebook of the series published by Sankei Shinbun, he is told by Takeshi Kaga who has played Toshimichi in "Tobu ga Gotoku" in 1990 advised him to do his best in playing the role when his shooting finished. And Eita learned the difficulty in acting Toshimichi.

I enjoyed the programme features various scene and the interviews with some actors. And when Eita finished his shooting, a man who wears a top hat and kimono with bunch of flowers (gift for the actors and actresses who finished shooting) gets out of the carriage and says "Oyatto-sa-a" (Good job!) to him. The man was Suzuki himself and it was really a surprise.
