II Naomasa was a son of II Naochika and an adoptes son of Ii Naotora. And he was a father of Ii Naokatsu and Naotaka. He was born in 1561 and lost his father about two years later.

Then he was guarded by Naotora, daughter of his cousin Naomori who was the head of the Ii clan. He was called Toramatsu in his childhood and was brought up in the house of NIINO Samanosuke where he lived with his mother Hiyo. But he was forced to escape to Hioraiji temple in Mikawa because ONO Tajimanokami Masatsugu sought his life. Then Hiyo remarried MATSUSHITA Gentaro Kiyokage and he was adopted.


In 1574, his relatives recommended him to serve TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and changed his family name back to his original family name Ii. And he was given his new name Manchiyo by him. He distinguished himself in the battles as the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, the Siege of Ueda in 1585 and the Siege of Odawara in 1590.

He celebrated his genpuku in 1582 and called himself Naomasa. He wore red armour in the battles and terrified his enemies as "Ii no akaoni", that means a red demon of the Iis (*). His red armour modeled on that of YAMAGATA Masakage,vassal of TAKEDA Shingen. After the Siege of Odawara, he became the lord of Minowa Castle in Kozuke and then Takasaki Castle.

He participated in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and was shot in the right elbow (or right shoulder, left arm) while fighting against the army of SHIMAZU Yoshihiro. After the battle, he negotiated with Ieyasu how to deal with the daimyos who took the side of ISHIDA Mitsunari. Besides he made efforts in establishing Tokugawa shogunate. He was ordered to protect the Imperial court and moved to Hikone where is near Kyoto.



After that, his wound sustained in the Battle of Sekigahara got worse and died in February 1602. He was a man with various anecdotes.

In this series, he is guarded by Naotora and goes to the hidden village in Kawana. But as Ii-no-ya was attacked by Takeda Shingen and the soldiers of the Imagawas seek him, he is taken to Horaiji by OKUYAMA Rokuzaemon. Then he is adopted by MATSUSHITA Gentaro who already married his mother Shino. After that he hopes to serve Tokugawa Ieyasu with his cousin Inosuke but thei first job is managing the footwears of the vassals of Ieyasu.

• Onna_Joshu_Naotora-people

Toramatsu and ONO Inosuke visit the Niinos with their mothers. They hope to serve TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and that’s the reasons why they have not celebrated coming of age ceremony (genpuku) yet (*). And Natsu will become a nun if his son succeeds in serving Ieyasu. Toramatsu, Inosuke and NAKANO Naohisa go around Ii-no-ya and finds people work actively thanks to Naotora's advice to KONDO Yasumochi. Then Toramatsu asks Naotora whether she plans to restore the Ii family or not but she doesn't hope so.


Toramatsu then goes to the well of Ryugu-kozo and tells Rokuzaemon that the Iis should be restored for the honour of his ancestors and ONO Tajimanokami Masatsugu. After that they return to the house of Matsushita Gentaro after meeting Takase for the first time in six years. And Nankei visits Sena in Okazaki Castle. He tells her that Toramatsu hopes to serve her husband Ieyasu. At Hamamatsu Castle, Ieyasu knows it but worries Whether he will serve him as MATSUSHITA Toramatsu or II Toramatsu because there is a marked difference between the two.


Before the interview with Ieyasu, Shino and Natsu offer their sons kamishimos and the pouches with the embroidery related to their names. In the interview, Toramasu and Inosuke are renamed Manchiyo and Manpuku respectively. Ieyasu asks which family name Manchiyo will choose in serving him and he answers he wants to serve him as II Manchiyo. Gentaro is surprised with it and the shock kills him. Because of this, they are ordered to work as zoriban, man in charge of footwear though they were supposed to serve as page.


(*) If he celebrates the ceremony after serving Ieyasu, eboshi oya, who puts eboshi on his head will be a man with a high status and it was regarded to be honourable at that time.

TAKEDA Shingen now conquers Totomi and advances to Mikawa. Nankei meets him and says that the Iis hope to restore the family. Then he tells Shingen that he wonders why he doesn't gets tired of fighting but he answers that he has no time for thinking such a thing. And in Kawana, Ryuunmaru says that why Takese didin't escape from the residence of the Iis at once. Then O-Towa realises that she is a spy because she brings him a bowl of tisane that is poisoned.


She became a spy of the Takedas because of the debts her dead mother left but O-Towa says she should not do so any more. And Shingen writes to her that she and the villagers of Ii-no-ya can go home instead of the head of KONDO Yasumochi. O-Towa talks to Yasumochi about it and says that she will not behead him and let them pretend to oppose each other. They return to Ii-no-ya to rebuild the burnt village but Ryuunmaru and NAKAMURAYA Yodayu appears there. Yodayu visits Ii-no-ya to take O-Towa and him to Sakai by water.


O-Towa is going to travel to Sakai with Ryuunmaru but finds it hard to tear herself away from Ii-no-ya. So Ryuunmaru behave rudely on purpose and leaves her there. At that time, Shingen sees an illusion of Jukeini at his base then vomits blood and died. Thanks to his death, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu recovers Mikawa and the western part of Totomi. The year 1574 has come and the Buddhist service of the 13th death anniversary of Naochika is held at Ryotanji temple. The Relatives of him includes MATSUSHITA Toramatsu who grows up into a fine young man are there.

MATSUSHITA Gentaro Kiyokage is an elder brother of Matsushita Jokei and the second husband of Hiyo, mother of Toramatsu, later Naomasa.

He married Hiyo in 1574 and served his son-in-law who became a senior vassal of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. He made a son of NAKANO Naoyuki succeed the Matsushitas and his descendant became a minister of Yoita domain in Echigo, branch domain of Hikone domain ruled by the head family of the Ii clan.

In this series, his younger brother intorduced him to Shino, mother of Toramatsu and they get married. Later he adopts Toramatsu as his son to make him avoid the danger of being a member of the Iis.

Four years have passed and Ii-no-ya is ruled by KONDO Yasumochi. Naotora returns to secular life and calls herself O-Towa again. Her mother Yuchinni stays in Ryotanji Temple and SETO Hokyu who peddles medicine proposes to Ayame, daughter of NIINO Samanosuke. At that time, Tamaki who was a member of Ryuunmaru group and lives in Sakai visits him and tells him to visit there. He tells O-Towa to start a new life in Sakai and Yuchinni hopes that they will have a child.


Takase who serves Yasumochi receives a poison from a peddler. She is a spy of the Takedas in reality but remorse stabs her. Around that time the Takeda army attacks Totomi with great vigour and it frightens TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. His vassals insist that they should take Takeda's side not that of Oda but then SAKUMA Nobumori, vassal of Nobunaga appears. Ieyasu attacks Shingen at Mikatagahara but is beaten and defecates with fear though he says it’s roasted miso, his ration (**).


Yasumochi finds there are no people in Ii-no-ya and asks the monks in Ryotanji why. Nankei answers that O-Towa took them to the hidden village in Kawana. Then she wears armour and returns to Ii-no-ya, hiding herself in an empty box. Yasumochi who is going to eat his rice gruel poisoned by Takase but stops it because his vassals shout Shingen is near. When he gathers his soldiers, O-Towa approaches and persuades him not to fight against the Takedas and burn the residence formerly owned by the Iis. After that Ryuunmru finds Takase who fails in killing Yasumochi.


(*) In this episode, it is Kondo Yasumochi who actually burns Ii-no-ya.
(**) The anecdote is well known but it is not based on fact. Some say it's the one after another battle.

• Onna_Joshu_Naotora-episodes

O-Dai no kata was a mother of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, wife of Tokugawa Hirotada and daughter of MIZUNO Tadamasa who ruled Chita, Owari.

As her father also ruled a part of Mikawa, she married Hirotada, lord of Okazaki Castle in Mikawa in 1541. and gave birth to Takechiyo, later Ieyasu in 1543. However, she was forced to be divorced because her elder brother Hiromoto served the Odas. She remarried HISAMATSU Toshikatsu, lord of Sakabe Castle in 1547 and had six children though she continued corresponding with Takechiyo. 

After the Battle of Okehazama, Motoyasu (former Takechiyo) allied himself with ODA Nobunaga. Then he becomes to live with her and made Toshikatsu and his three sons between her serve him. In 1567, he changed his name Tokugawa Ieyasu and served TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi after the Honnnoji Incident. And in 1600, he won the Battle of Sekigahara and became shogun. Then she met the Emperor Goyozei and Kodaiin (Kita no Mandokoro) and told them that he has no hostility to the Toyotomi clan.

She became a nun after the death of Toshikatsu and called herself Dentsuin. She died in 1602 and was buried in Dentsuin Temple in Edo.

She was posthumously awarded the court rank of ju ichi i in 1850.

In this series, she is described as a fond mother of Ieyasu though being harsh to his wife Sena. Their strained relationship influences the future of Sena and her son Nobuyasu.

IMAGAWA Ujizane and TOKUGAWA Ieyasu become reconciled to each other. While Ieyasu is satisfied with the formation of the anti-Takeda network, his wife Sena is dissatisfied that he leaves the Iis alone but is rebuked by O-Dai no kata,mother of Ieyasu. And Ujizane stays at the Hojos, parent’s house of his wife Haru. In Ii-no-ya, Ryuunmaru still stays at Ryotanji Temple. It’s hard for Naotora to restore the Iis without any battles and KONDO Yasumochi who now rules Ii-no-ya visits her and says he plans to employ her vassals.


After that, MATSUSHITA Jokei visits Ryotanji and his brother Gentaro, husband of Shino hopes to adopt Toramatsut. But it causes gifficulty in restoring the Iis. Though Ryuunmatsu tells Naotora to abandon the restore, Naotora wants to wreak the grudge of those who died to protect the Iis including Naochika and Masatsugu. Then Nankei tells her not to worry about it and goes to the Horaiji Temple where Toramatsu and Rokuzaemo stays and talks to them about the adoption.


Toramatsu hesitates to be adopted by Gentaro because he is told to succeed the Iis by Naotora. Then Nankei makes Naotora go back and tells him that he has no obligation to obey her because she is not the head any more. Finally, he is adopted by Gentaro and some family members and the vassals of the Iis decide how to dispose of themselves. After returning from Kawana, she finds Ryuunmaru by the well of Ryugu-kozo. He says that he loves a woman and then kisses her. In 1571, HOJO Ujiyasu dies and Ujizane and Haru are exiled from Sagami but TAKEDA Shingen is happy to hear it.


Personally, I feel something out of place in this episode, especially the scene in which Ryuunmaru kisses Naotora.

Naotora goes to Kiga with Nankei, Ketsuzan and others and finds Ryuunmaru who is injured. They take him to Ryotanji Temple to treat him (*) and Naotora makes him swallow tisane from her mouth. And there appears SUZUKI Shigeyoshi, son of Shigetoki appears and asks her to chant a sutra for his dead father. When she does so, Ryuunmaru recovers his sences and becomes better. He asks how he take medicine when he was unconsciousness and Naotora says that Nankei did it with smile.

Osawa Mototane surrenders TOKUGAWA Ieyasu who thinks the attack on Kiga is overkill. But SAKAI Tadatsugu,who commanded the attack says it needs no tolerance. After that, MATSUDHITA Jokei visits Kakegawa Castle where IMAGAWA Ujizane is sheltered and make him and Ieyasu meet secretly. Ujizane says that he hopes to decide everything by playing kemari though Ieyasu says it may be the trigger of another battle. Then he leaves there soon and Ieyasu becomes to manage the castle but it makes TAKEDA Shingen angry.

Ryuunmaru recovers his health and talks with about the battles surrounds them though very few people are attacked or killed in the Iis' fief. At that time she is told to accompany Koten to treat the wound of KONDO Yasumochi. She feels hesitated but Ryuunmaru encourages her to do so to put him under an obligation. And she receives a letter from Yuchinni that is written about her life at Kawana. However, Ryuunmaru disappears suddenly because he goes to Kiga to search his men but in vain. Ryuunmaru and Naotora regrets that they remain alive. Besides SETO HoKyu and his attendant Tatsu who take the tonsure to learn pharmacy from Koten.

The death of Masatsugu is informed to the Iis, Natsu and her son Inosuke. Natsu feels sad but acts bravely. But Naotora shuts herself up in a room of Ryotanji Temple and continues to play go. She seems to be emotionally unstable and believes that Masatsugu is still alive and cannot remember Ryuunmaru when he visits her. In Kiga where he lives, many people betray the Imagawas and become to yield their town to TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. But Ryuunmaru is not certain whether he is trustworthy or not. He tells his men to be ready to escape from there.

Ieyasu is going to take Kakegawa Castle where IMAGAWA Ujizane is sheltered by ASAHINA Yasutomo. Then MATSUSHITA Jokei appears and introduces SETO Hokyu to Ieyasu. Hokyu brings military supplies to Hikima Castle where Ieyasu stays. But when the New Year (1569) begins, Ieyasu is forced into a hard fight by the Hojos who support the Imagawas. Osawa Mototane, lord of Horie Castle attacks Horikawa Castle in Kiga and orders the people to resist Ieyasu. However, Ryuunmaru thinks that Mototane should not involve common people in the battle and throws him and his vassals into disorder by putting out the light in Horikawa Castle.

He and his men plan to make Kiga people escape from a hidden port of the castle. There appear a group of ships of NAKAMURAYA Yodayu but the ships are requisitioned by Ieyasu because he takes the side of the Tokugawas. And the commander SAKAI Tadatsugu orders the soldiers to make a raid on them. In Ii-no-ya, Natora goes into sleep after she realised that Masatsugu has gone. She has a nightmare of killing Ryuunmaru by herself and then wakes up. At that moment, Hokyu rushes into the temple and says that there’s a raid in Kiga.
