「困った校長先生の冒険」の原作は『ボヘミアの醜聞』です。オルムシュタイン校長は221Bを訪れ、ホームズとワトソンに不倫関係について話し合います。ホームズは冷静にその話を聞きますが、ワトソンは驚いて（故意に？）「奥さんがいるのにですか」と叫びます。この時点では、ホームズはワトソンに比べると大人びて見えます。

しかし仮病を使って保健室に行き、アドラー先生と話をするホームズはどぎまぎしています。この中では、原作やドラマ同様に、彼女はホームズを出し抜きますが、それに加えて、仮病と知っていて薬を飲ませたり、絵をほめてくれたホームズに、恋人のゴドフリー・ノートンの目前で抱きついたりします。

偽の火事を起こした後、アドラー先生はホームズに、「いつも自分が一番賢いと思わないことね」と言います。アイリーン・アドラーは唯一、ホームズと対等に渉りあえる女性ですが、この第1シリーズでは15歳のホームズ相手に、すべての点で優っている感じです。最終回で彼を見送る中にアドラー先生がいなかったのは、それも一因なのかもしれません。

"The Adventure of the Headmaster with Trouble"is based on "A Scandal in Bohemia". Headmaster Ormstein visits 221B and tells Holmes and Watson about his illicit love affair. Holmes listens to it calmly but Watson cries out"But you are married, sir" in surprise (intentionally?). At this point, Holmes looks like an adult in comparison with Watson.

However he gets nervous when he goes to nurse's office and talks with Irene Adler. In the episode, she outwits Holmes in reasoning as in the canon and dramas. Besides she makes him take medicine though she knows his illness is fake and hugs him who appreciates her picture in front of her lover Godfrey Norton.

After the false fire, she tells him not to think that he outdoes others in reasoning. Irene Adler is the only woman who can compete equally to him but it seems she exceeds fifteen-year-old Holmes in all in the first series. It may be one of the reasons why she is not among those who send off Holmes in the final episode.

昨日放送された「ダグラスさんのお屋敷の冒険」についてです。この回は『恐怖の谷』が原作になっていますが、長いので、放送では殺人事件のみが扱われています。ビートン校裏手のお屋敷で、主のダグラス氏が殺されたという情報を聞いたホームズは、本物の死体を見たいという好奇心から、夜間なのにワトソンを連れて現場に向かいます。校則を破って外出したのみならず、ホームズは捜査まで始めます。流石に目のつけどころは鋭いのですが、如何せん彼らは寄宿学校の生徒で未成年者であり、捜査の邪魔になると、現場の責任者であるマクドナルド警部からつまみ出されそうになります。

その間をとりなしてくれたのが、意外にもモリアーティ教頭でした。生徒が2人いるという連絡を受けて、ダグラス氏の屋敷にやって来ていたのです。マクドナルド警部は不承不承耳を傾けますが、結局2人は捜査のその後の進展を目にすることなく、学校に連れ戻されてしまいます。モリアーティ教頭は教育者の立場から、ホームズに言います。「お前は外の世界では、名探偵ではなくただの生意気な小僧でしかない。己の小ささを思い知れ」モリアーティの言葉が当を得たものであり、この先生のおかげでマクドナルド警部と話ができただけに、ホームズはやるせなさを感じます。さらに、ホームズは1週間、ワトソンは3日間の謹慎となってしまいます。

この回には、もう一つ示唆的な場面があります。それは、「最初の冒険」で、イノーク・ドレッバーとジョセフ・スタンガスンの策略により、退学せざるを得なくなったジェファーソン・ホープとの出会いです。ホープはかつてとは大きく変わり、運送の仕事をしながら、彫刻家の勉強していてとても生き生きしていました。このホープの存在もまた、次回そして最終回のホームズに影響するのではないかと思われます。

I write about "The Adventure of the Residence of Mr. Douglas" that was broadcast yesterday. It is based on "The Valley of Fear". As the story is long, only the scene of murder of Mr. Douglas is dramatised in the episode. Holmes learns that Mr. Douglas, owner of the residence in the back of Beeton School is murdered and goes there with Watson with the curiosity of seeing a real dead body though it's nighttime. Not onlly going out against the regulations, he begins investigating there also. Though he has a sharp observant eye as always, it's true that they are pupils and minors. Inspector MadDonald who is in charge of investigating the murder tries to turn them out of doors for he considers they interrupt their search.

Unexpectedly, it's Deputy Headmaster Moriarty who mediates between them and the police. He hears about two pupils are in the residence and visits there to take them back. Though Inspector MacDonald listens to what Holmes says unwillingly, they are obligeｄ to go back to Baker House at last without seeing the progress of the investigation. As an educator, Moriarty tells Holmes that he is not a master detective but just an impertinent boy outside the school and he should realise his immatureness. Holmes becomes disconsolate since the words of Moriarty are right and the conversation with Inspector MacDonald is thanks to his mediation. Besides Holmes and Watson are suspended from attending class for a week and three days respectively.

There is another scene that is suggestive in the episode. Holmes and Watson meet Jefferson Hope again. In the first episode "The First Adventure", who is forced to leave Beeton School because of a trap by Enoch Drebber and Joseph Stangerson. Hope is greatly different from before and he looks lively for he now works as carrier and studies to become a sculptor. His existence seems to influence Holmes in two episodes left.

ジョン・H・ワトソンも15歳ですが、原作や他の映画あるいはドラマ同様、ホームズとは違う性格です。実直で温厚で、時に情熱的になる点はホームズと対照的です。ワトソンがビートン校に入学した時、もしホームズに別のルームメイトがいたら、ワトソンの人生はかなり違ったものになったでしょう。オーストラリアにいた時は、有力者の息子が肌の色の違う生徒をいじめたため、そのいじめた生徒を殴ったことがありました。しかしそのことと転校は無関係とワトソンは言います。ラグビーを引退したとはいえ、時間があればボールを磨いています。ワトソンは風変わりなホームズを調査のみならず、日常生活でも支えています。その一方で、15歳の少年らしく女の子にも関心があり、ホームズと共にメアリー・モースタンに会った後は、いつも通りにシャボン玉の研究を続けるホームズに、「君は女の子を好きになったことはないの？」と問いただします。

John H. Watson is fifteen-year-old also but his character is much different from Holmes as he is in the canon and other films or dramas. He is scrupulous, gentle and sometimes becomes passionate in contrast to his roomamate. If Holmes had another roommate when he entered Beeton School, his life would be so changed. When he was in Australia, he hit a son of a man of influence who teased someone whose skin color is different from his own. But Watson says it's not related to changing his school. Though retiring from rugby, he polishes his oval ball when he has time. He supports Holmes not only in his investigation but in his daily life also. As is usual with 15-year-old boy, he takes an interest in girls on the other hand. After they met Mary Morstan, Watson asks Holmes "Haven't you ever loved a girl?" for he continues studying soap bubbles as usual.

この人形劇のホームズは15歳の、神経質な美少年です。原作のホームズの風変わりな部分、好奇心の強いところが、思春期の少年の特徴として描かれています。しかも学校が舞台なので、殺人もなければ銃を撃つこともなく、そのため推理の面白さが追求されています。また、動物たちや彼らの言葉を理解する生徒が調査に協力するため、ファンタジーと捉えることもできます。

ホームズは元々恋愛には縁のない存在とされますが、この少年ホームズは、美しくて優しく、頭の切れる保健のアイリーン・アドラー先生にはいくらかの関心があるようです。アドラー先生は、時折ホームズの鼻の頭を指でぴんと弾きます。このホームズはピノキオにちょっと似ていて、そのためホームズとアドラー先生の2人は、ピノキオと妖精（仙女）を思い起こさせます。

Sherlock Holmes is a nervous, good-looking fifteen-year-old boy in this series. The eccentricity and curiosity of Holmes in the canon are descibed as characteristics of boy at puberty. As it is set in the school, there's no murder and no guns. So the puppetry pursues the interest of reasoning iｔself. And it is considered to be a kind of fantasy also for animals and a pupil who undesrstands their language are included in those who support him.

Though he is said to be unrelated to love, the boy seems to have some interests in Irene Adler, an elegant, sweet and intelligent school nurse who occasionally flips the head of his nose with her fingers. As this Holmes looks like Pinocchio a bit, he and Miss Adler remind me of the marionette and fairy.
