アブドラはインドから来た背の高い留学生で、特徴のある話し方をします。アーサー・モースタンと同室ですが、モースタンがジョナサン・スモールとトンガに襲われた時は眠っていました。なぜか？モースタンが毎晩歌の練習をするため、アイマスクと耳栓を付けていたからです。また、寝る前にアーチャー寮の屋根の上でヨガをやりますが、その時クッションとして使っていた熊のぬいぐるみのせいで、その後事件に巻き込まれてしまいます。

Abdullah is a tall pupil from India and has a characteristic way of talking. He is a roommate of Arthur Morstan but he was asleep when Morstan was attacked by Jonathan Small and Tonga. Why? Because he wears an eye mask and earplugs for Arthur does a lesson of singing every night. Besides he does yoga on the roof of Archer House before going to bed and a stuffed bear he uses as cushion on that occasion makes him involved in an affair later. 

ある晩何者かがシャーマンの飼育小屋に忍び込み、彼女を誘拐する。シャーマンは熊の頭の形のフードを被せられ、かなり長い距離を歩いた。その後、シャーマンはその人物におんぶされ、目隠しを取って、ソフィというメスの老犬の通訳をするようにいわれる。この誘拐犯は、ディーラー寮の生徒のウィルスン・ケンプで、その数日前に学校の実験室からネアンデルタール人の骨の標本を盗んだが、ソフィに持って行かれたのだった。そこで、イヌ語のわかるシャーマンから事情を聞き出そうとしたのだが、ソフィは歳のせいで忘れたと答える。

シャーマンはホームズに、ソフィをそこから自由にさせてくれと頼む。ホームズはシャーマンの言葉から、彼女が飼われていたのはディーラー寮の地下倉庫だと推理し、ワトソン、兄のマイクロフト、そしてシャーマンの飼犬トビーとそこに向かうが、もぬけのからだった。彼らは結局ケンプを見つけ出すものの、生徒会長で、ケンプを実の弟のようにかわいがるマイクロフトは、犬と会話が出来る人間などないと口にする。さらにこの事件をなかったことにして、意義を唱えたワトソンを殴るのだった。しかし、ソフィの新しい家であるシャーマンの小屋に行ったホームズとワトソンは、トビーがホームズの言葉を理解できたことを知る。

「生真面目な証人の冒険」ではガルシアとヘンダーソンの2人が、レストレードを利用して、彼らとレストレードがあたかも同じ部屋にずっといたかのように装います。しかし実際は、2人はレストレードを催眠剤で眠らせた後、犬に餌をやりに部屋を出て行ったわけです。なぜ2人はレストレードをアリバイの証人にしたのでしょうか？それは彼が実に真面目だからです。生活委員として、レストレードは成績はよくないが真面目さでは名が通っています。

ある日、レストレードはホームズに、ガルシアそしてヘンダーソンという2人の生徒が失踪した件の調査を依頼する。その前日、ボードゲームをやっていてガルシアと意気投合したレストレードは、彼とヘンダーソンが住むアーチャー寮の部屋を訪ねて、ウェリントン将軍について語り合った。しかし翌朝、レストレードがその部屋で目覚めると2人の姿はなかった。ホームズは、自分とワトソンが立ち入り禁止区域にいたことを、レストレードがロイロット先生に伝え、ひどく注意されたことを理由にこの依頼を断るが、結局依頼を受け入れる。そこへ、レストレード同様に生活委員のべインズが現れる。べインズは、レストレードとガルシア、ヘンダーソンはある寮の厨房からパンを盗んで売っていたが、仲間割れにより、レストレードが他の2人を「消した」と断言し、彼をモリアーティ教頭の元へ連れ去る。

その後、ホームズとワトソンは事件の現場に行くが、そこに待ち構えていたのはべインズだった。部屋の中で板切れが見つかるが、ホームズは決め手を見いだせない。べインズはホームズに推理勝負を持ちかけ、ホームズは負けてしまう。べインズのからかうような笑いにいら立ったホームズは221Bに戻り、ピロピロ笛を吹いて考えをまとめる。そして、ガルシアとヘンダーソンがいなくなった理由は、レストレードの生真面目さにあることを突き止める。その前夜、2人は眠っているレストレードを置いて部屋を出て行くが、それは彼を証人に仕立てることで、自分たちのアリバイを完璧にするためだった。2人はひそかに犬を飼っている学校の裏の洞窟に向かったのだが、そのそばにある穴に落ちたため、急に姿を消してしまったのでだった。盗んだパンは犬のためのえさで、板切れはおもちゃだったのである。



One day, Lestrade requests Holmes to search two missing pupils called Garcia and Henderson. On the day before, he visited their room in Archer House and talked about Lord Wellington for he became friends with Garcia during playinｇ a board game. But he finds both of them disappear when he wakes up in the room on the following morning. Holmes, who refuses it once for he and Watson were severely warned by Grimesby Roylott because Lestrade told him that they were in the area where pupils are prohibited to enter but he accepts it finally. Then Baynes, a member of life guidance committee as well as Lestrade appears. He asserts that Lestrade, Garcia and Henderson steal bread from a kitchen of a house and sell it but their discord makes Lestrade "liquidate" other members. Baynes takes him to Deputy Head Moriarty.

After that, Holmes and Watson go to the room where the affair occurred. However Baynes waits for them and they find a piece of wood but Holmes cannot catch a clue. Baynes offers him a game of reasoning but Holmes is beaten. He is irritated by teasing laughter of Baynes and goes back to 221B and he blows one of his party horns to organise his thoughts. Then he finds out that the disappearance of Garcia and Henderson is caused by the seriousness of Lestrade. On the previous night, they left the room leaving sleeping Lestrade for they pretended to make the alibi perfectly by making him a witness. They went to is a cave in the back of the school where they keep a dog secretly. They fell into a hole near the cave and that's why they disappear suddenly. The bread they steel is the food for the dog and a piece of wood is its toy.

前回の大河ドラマ『花燃ゆ』で、吉田松陰は刑死します。この中で、松陰と大老井伊直弼は、差し向かいで言葉を交わしますが、この当時の習慣から見てこれはありえません。いずれにせよ、高橋英樹さんが演じる井伊直弼の、ある種威厳のある声は、「ダグラスさんのお屋敷の冒険」で、ホームズに「己の小ささを思い知れ」と言ったモリアーティ教頭の声を連想させます、あるいは、自らが厳しい状況に置かれている井伊は、思うままに天下国家を論じる松陰に、こっちの身にもなってみろと一喝したいのかもしれません。

In the latest episode of Taiga Drama "Hana-moyu", YOSHIDA Shoin is executed. In it, he and Ii Naosuke, chief minister of the government talk face to face though it's impossible judging from the custom at that time. Anyway the voice of Ii who is played by Hideki Takahashi has a kind of dignity and it reminds me of that of Deputy Headmaster Moriarty who tells Holmes to realise his immatureness in "The Adventure of the Residence of Mr. Douglas". Or Ii, who is in severe situation may want to shout for Shoin who argues high affairs of state as he pleases to put himself in his position.

「愉快な四人組の冒険1」と「2」にも書いていますが、この曲は元々ジョナサン・スモールが作ったもので、タイトルも『あなたは宝物』でした。しかしアーサー・モースタンはこの曲を改変し、学校対抗の音楽コンクールに出場することを決めます。それは、アーサーがジョニーとの約束を破ったということでした、ジョニーはこれに怒り、それが元で、トレジャーズのメンバーを襲うことになります。ジョニーがこれを告白したことで、メアリー・モースタンは心を痛めます。しかも、元々の『あなたは宝物』は、メアリー・モースタンのために作られた曲でした。

しかしながら、ハーモニーの美しいこの曲はなかなか魅力的です。このエピソード後半の最後で、ワトソンが「メアリー、メアリー、アイラブユー」という歌詞で調子はずれにこの曲を歌い、ホームズを混乱させます。

As I write in "The Adventure of the Cheerful Four" and " 2", the song is originally made by Jonathan Small and titled "You Are My Treasure". But it is modified by Arthur Morstan who decides to enter a musical competition between schools. It means that Arthur breaks a promise with him. Jonny gets angry and it causes him attack the members of the Treasures. This confession of his makes Mary Morstan be grieved. Besides, his original song "You Are My treasure" is made for her.

However the harmony of the song is beautiful and quite attractive. At the end of the second episode, Watson sings the song in his original words "Mary, Mary, I love you" that is off-key and it confuses Holmes.
