The Historical Background of "Taiheiki"

The entry about the episode 37 of "Sego-don" will be posted by next Tuesday.

This series sets in the medieval Japan. At that time, the Kamakura shogunate came to the end due to Mongol invasions of Japan, an arbitrary rule of the Hōjō clan and the movement of overthrowing the shogunate by Emperor Godaigo. The Imperial line was divided then and the emperor who was from Daikakuji-tō, one of the lines attempted to rule Japan by himself instead of the shogunate.

太平記後醍醐天皇
Emperor Godaigo attempts to overthrow the shogunate and rule Japan by himself

But his attempt was found out and he was exiled to the Oki Island. On this occasion, some  powerful clans that opposed the shogunate rose in arms. And ASHIKAGA Takauji, main character of the series once fought against such clans. But later he supported Godaigo who got put of the island and began the Kenmu Restoration. However, his rule didn't go well and Takauji betrayed him at last and established the Muromachi shogunate in Kyoto. On the other hand, the Imperial line was still divided and he supported Hokuchō (Northern Court) against Nanchō (Southern Court) established by Godaigo. The opposition continued over 50 years and the period is called Nanbokucho (Northern and Southern Courts) period.

太平記2武士VS僧
The monks and nuns of Jishu sect who march chanting and dancing are stopped by samurais

In the middle ages in Japan, there was a change in manorial system. Besides common people came to the fore and strange manners and customs includes "Basara daimyo" became popular. In Buddhism, Jishu sect whose doctrine was chanting the name of Buddha with dance gained power. And samurais trained themselves by kasagake and yabusame. Both kasagake and yabusame are shooting arrows toward distant target from horseback but the types of targets in kasagake are various. And in it, an archer should shoot the target without stopping his horse. Both of them still remain and especially yabusame is demonstrated as the Shinto ritual.

Taiheiki-3

First of all, the episode 37 of "Sego-don" was not broadcast on the 30th September because of the approach of a big typhoon. So I will post about the episode as soon as it's broadcast.

Takauji left the residence of SASAKI Dōyo with ISSHIKI Umanosuke, his vassal. But they are involved in the Shōchū Incident in which TOKI Yorikazu is attacked by Rokuhara Tandai, one of the posts of the Kamakura shogunate to maintain public order in Kyoto, settles disputes and watches the Imperial court. So he is investigated by Rokuhara Tandai while Dōyo left Kyoto. It is the rebellion of Emperor Godaigo in actual and HINO Toshimoto and Dōyo pull the strings behind the scenes. ASHIKAGA Sadauji is informed about it and apologises NAGASAKI Engi who laughs mockingly and says,
"Your son is outrageous enough to have participated in such a rebellion".

太平記4正中の変
Toki Yorikazu is attacked by the soldiers of Rokuhara Tandai

The samurais who serve the shogunate say that the Emperor shouls apologise them and the rebellion of the emperor is unprecedented. But YOSHIDA Sadafusa, adviser of the Emperor tells him to carry out his intention. And Hino Toshimoto is arrested and is sent to Kamakura under escort. Before it, he asks Mashira no Ishi to take his dagger to KUSUNOKI Masashige in Kawachi (eastern part of current Osaka).

He tells the officers that it's true that he met a man called Ashikaga Takauji but it's not this man. Engi becomes confused with his words. Dōyo also says that the man whom he met is much bigger than him.

It originally is the dispute in the Andō clan is developed to the rebellion by  the intervention of the shogunate army. Sadauji tells them that they will be defeated if they make an enemy of the shogunate. And he asks Yoshisada whether it is his plot or not. Yoshisada just says his clan has no soldier and no money.

太平記5高氏と道誉
Sasaki Dōyo (Takanori Jinnai, left) sees Takauji (Hiroyuki Sanada) and says he is not the man called Ashikaga Takauji he met in Kyoto

AKAHASHI Moritoki, one of the chief vassals traces that NAGASAKI Takasuke, son of Engi acts wrong over the dispute in the Andō clan. This is what the shogunate should take responsibility for. So the arrest of Takauji that Engi traced should be reexamined. Engi scolds his son severely and Takatoki, shikken of the shogunate sighs over it in exaggerated terms and says what he really wants is nothing but calmness. Like Sadauji, Moritoki tries to help Takauji.

Taiheiki-1

I will begin writing about "Taiheiki" soon. This entry is the introduction.

太平記足利高氏
Hiroyuki Sanada as Ashikaga Takauji

The Taiga Drama series based on "Shihon Taiheiki" by Eiji Yoshikawa was broadcast in 1991. It is set on the 14th century Japan. At that time, the Kamakura Bakufu (Kamakura shogunate) ruled by the Hojo clan became weakened and some of the vassals including ASHIKAGA Takauji, main character of the series uprose. Finally the shogunate fell. At the same time, there was a problem in the inheriting the Imperial Throne.

太平記後醍醐天皇
KATAOKA Takao (current KATAOKA Nizaemon XV) as Emperor Godaigo

Takauji was one of the vassals of the shogunate and betrayed the Hojo clan. Then he served Emperor Godaigo, who was forced to retire and was exiled to Oki Islands but was restored to the throne. In addition to Takauji, the samurais who formerly served the Kamakura shogunate as KUSUNOKI Masashige, NITTA Yoshisada, SASAKI Dōyo etc. tried to establish the new period.

太平記道誉
Takanori Jinnai as Sasaki Dōyo, a typical basara daimyo

However, there was a discord between the emperor and Takauji. Then he attempted to establish a new period for samurais and established Muromachi (Ashikaga) shogunate. Then he was appointed as the first shogun. Needless to say, many battles were fought until the arrival of the new age and the hostile relations in them influenced those in Sengoku period.

太平記5新田義貞
Kenichi Hagiwara (*) as Nitta Yoshisada

Not only samurais, but also common people and women are involved in the series. "Taiheiki" is a kind of war chronicle and the word taihei means pacification. It also repose of the souls especiallywho died for the southern dynasty.

太平記12文を読む正成
Tetsuya Takeda as Kusunoki Masashige

As the division in the Imperial family was sensitive to dramatise, there are very few films and TV series that describe the period. This series is the second TV series and it mainly describes the life of Takauji who always worries about or considers something but established the Muromachi shogunate at last.

太平記北条高時
Tsurutarō Kataoka as Hōjō Takatoki

(*) Hagiwara left the series because of illness and Jinpachi Nezu played the role after that.

The images are from the DVD series if "Taiheiki".

Women's Fashion in the 16th Century Japan

Uchikake

Uchikake is a kind of overgarment worn by high-ranking women and it is worn by a bride in Japanse style wedding today. Especially it means a long kosode and was worn over ordinary kosode. It was worn as everyday clothes as well as formal clothes. In "Fyūrin Kazan", Sanjō Fujin (Chizuru Ikewaki), wife of TAKEDA Harunobu (Shingen) usually wears uchikake.

風林火山三条夫人打掛(部分)

And Yu-u hime (Miyuki Shibamoto), concubine of Harunobu wears a pink uchikake in Ozaka Kannon-in where she lives.
風林火山由布姫打掛

Momo hime (Naomi Nishida), elder sister of NAGAO Kagetora (later UESUGI Kenshin) wears a dark blue uchikake.
風林火山桃姫打掛2

In "Sanada Maru", Nei (Kyōka Suzuki, centre), Chacha (Yūko Takeuchi, left) and Acha no Tsubone (Yuki Saitō) gather and talk over sweets. All of them wear uchikake.

真田丸女性たちの打掛

II Naotora (Kō Shibasaki), main character of "Onna Joshu Naotora" wears a patchworked uchikake though this type was not popular in her younger days in actual fact.

おんな城主直虎城主直虎(12)

And in Edo period, uchikake was still worn by noblewomen. In "Segodon", Atsu hime (Keiko Kitagawa, right) wears a cream-coloured uchikake and talks with her husband Tokugawa Iesada.
西郷どん15家定と篤姫

In "Sanada Maru", Kaoru (Atsuko Takahata), wife of Sanada Masayuki wears hitoe, unlined kimono over the kosode and wears a kouchigi over it. This is the style of an aristocrat woman and she served an aristocrat family before her marriage. The sleeves openings are bigger that those of a uchikake.

真田丸薫小袿2

And in "Taiheiki", Tōko (Yasuko Sawaguchi, right), wife of Ashikaga Takauji wears a uchigi over the hitoe. The series is set in the 14th century and at that time uchigi was popular among high-ranking women. Like kouchigi, the sleeve openings are big.

太平記尊氏と登子袿

In "Onna Joshu Naotora", O-Towa (former Naotora) who becomes a farmer visits TOKUGAWA Ieyasu with her uchikake and wears it over kosode when she arrives at his castle. But it's probably impossible. A woman who usually wears uchikake uses a palanquin when she goes somewhere. And though having been a ruler, she then becomes a farmer so I doubt whether she can meet Ieyasu face to face or not.

The images are from the DVD series of "Furin Kazan", "Sanada Maru" and "Taiheiki" and the official websites of "Onna Joshu Naotora" and "Segodon".

Men's Fashion in the 16th Century Japan

7.Kabuto

Today I write about the helmets in the 16th century Japan. Like other countries, helmet was essential to the battles or wars in Japan. Helmet worn in the wars is called "kabuto" in Japanese.

Around the 11th century, samurai in northern Japan wore round kabuto. In "Homura Tatsu", Abe no Sadatō (Takehiro Murata, right), son of Abe no Yoritoki who has a power in northern Japan wears a round kabuto (*) and fur. He talks with Fujiwara no Tsunekiyo (Ken Watanabe).

炎立つ4貞任と経清ー兜

In Kamakura period, the crest and fukigaeshi, wing-like projections of both sides became larger and more gorgeous. Ashikaga Takauji (Hiroyuki Sanada) in "Taiheiki" wears the typical kabuto in the 14th century, medieval days in Japan.

太平記尊氏甲冑姿-兜

At the end of the 15th century, so-called Sengoku period began. In the age of civil wars, many samurais made armours including kabutos suit to their tastes. Obu Toramasa (Akio Kaneda) in "Furin Kazan" wears red armour.

風林火山飯富虎昌兜

Baba Nobuharu (Kazuya Takahashi) wears a kabuto with a metallic crest and jinbaori. Jinbaori was a sleeveless haori and used against the coldness in battlefield.

風林火山馬場信春兜

Usami Sadamitsu (Ken Ogata), one of the vassals of the Uesugi Kenshin or Masatora also wears a kabuto with a metal crest. The flag behind him is one of the standards of Kenshin.

風林火山宇佐美定満兜

Yamamoto Kansuke (Seiyō Uchino), main character of "Fūrin Kazan" wears a dark kabuto with a crest in the shape of "yama" in Chinese letters. "Yama" is after his family name Yamamoto. And he wears black robe that is alike to shawl instead of jinbaori.  It is a kind of clerical garment because he is an ostensible priest.

風林火山山本勘助兜

Takeda Shingen (ICHIKAWA Kamejirō) wears "Suwa Hosshō kabuto" that is like mane. He wears red shawl instead of jinbaori as he is an ostensible also.

風林火山諏訪法性兜

Murakami Yoshikiko (Toshiyuki Nagashima) wears a kabuto with a crescent-shaped crest. Date Masamune or Yamanaka Shikanosuke, vassal of the Amago clan also wore the kabutos with this kind of crest.

風林火山村上義清兜

The crest of the kabuto of Sanada Yukitaka (Kuranosuke Sasaki) is six coins, family crest of his clan.

風林火山真田幸隆兜

And Masato Sakai who plays the role of Sanada Yukimura, grandson of Yukitaka in "Sanada Maru" wears red armour. Like his grandfather's, the crest of his kabuto is six coins and is decorated with antlers.

真田幸村赤備えの兜

(*) The round kabuto was regarded as old-fashioned or rustic one at that time.

The images are form the DVD series of "Homura Tatsu", "Taiheiki", "Fūrin Kazan" and "Sanada Maru".

To those who read the post on Taiga Drama in English 12 "Taiheiki" and "Homura Tatsu"

I write about three Taiga Drama series, "Onna Joshu Naotora", "Samada Maru" and "Furin Kazan" now. I will finish the posts on "Sanada Maru" soon and the broadcast of "Onna Joshu Naotora" will end on the 17th of December.

太平記天目
Hiroyuki Sanada as Ashikaga Takauji in "Taiheiki"

I plan to post the episodes on "Sego-don", a new series that is to be broadcast next year in parallel with those of "Furin Kazan". And I also plan to write about "Taiheiki", a chronology of the Middle Ages mentioned in the post about hitatare and "Homura Tatsu", the nine-month series that describes Oshu Fujiwara clan, a powerful family from the ancient times to the Middle Ages in northern Japan. If possible, I'd like to introduce "Mori Motonari" that describes a daimyo who hold supremacy in the Chugoku region in the 16th century also.

炎立つ藤原経清
Ken Watanabe as Fujiwara no Tsunekiyo in "Homura Tatsu"

Especially the series produced and broadcast from 1980s to 1990s are excellent and still attract many viewers. So the fans of such traditional series tend to regard recent ones are not Taiga Drama series but cosplay or modern dramas set in the Sengoku period or Tokugawa shogunate. I think it's true in a sence and hope the producers and scriptwriters will go back to the basics in the near future.

Men's Fashion in the 16th century Japan

3. Hitatare

Hitatare looks like suo but the code is not made of leather and made of silk in the 16th century. It's worn as formal wear of samurai. And when a samurai wears hitatare, he should put eboshi, a cap made of paper and wax on his head.

真田丸祝言
Sanada Nobushige (right) wears hitatare at his wedding ceremony (Sanada Maru)

真田丸昌幸目通り

風林火山正月評定2
On New Year's Day, members of Shinano Senpo Shu includes Sanada Yukitaka (right) and Aiki Ichibei (left) wear their hitatares (Furin Kazan)

But it was worn by common men in ancient times because it's regarded as the clothes for low-class people. Around the late Heian Period, about the 11th century, it became to be worn by samurais as everyday clothes. The images below are from "Taiheiki", the twenty-ninth series of Taiga drama that describes the politics and battles in Nanbokucho jidai, the period of the Northern and Souther Courts, from 1331 to 1392. At this time, strings are passed through the sleeves and the hems of hakama and samurai who wears it can move easier because the cuffs and hems are narrowed by pulling strings.

太平記直垂袖はずし
Takauji tucks up the sleeves of his hitatare by stopping both by kikutoji, a kind of decorative cord

As the series "Taiheiki" is interesting and exciting, I would like to write about it if I have a chance.

I will write on yoroi hitatare worn under samurai's armour later.
