6. Armour and battlefield

<Yoroi> (Japanese armour)

As there were many battled in the 16th century Japan, samurais had many opportunities to wear armours. Many of them wore traditional ones but some of them favoured the armours  influenced by those of western countries as time passed.

<Horo>

Some samurais were appointed to HORO MUSHA in battles. They usually were messengers and packs a protector to prevent them from receiving arrows. In ancient times, they wore cloth but later it changed into a protector covered with yellow or red cloth. The protector resembled a big basket.

Not only horo, messengers of some clans carried flags like "Mukade shu" of the Takeda clan. Those who could carry them are elites who were selected from the sons of senior vassals.

<Headquarters and bases>

Headquarters or bases were surrounded by the tents with family crest. General or commander had a war council in them. They sat on shogi, a kind of collapsible stool and a table was consisted of shields and shogis. And the flags are raised as in the image.

In many battles, main weapons were spears, arrow and bows and swords. But from the middle 16th century, matchlocks became to be used.

During the winter campaign of the Siege of Osaka, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu used a field culverin to threat Chacha (Lady Yodo), mother of TOYOTOMI Hideyori. This is said to have been imported from England.

To tell the truth, cannons were not so much used in the Sengoku period. This is one of the few examples that a cannon overwhelmed the enemy in Japan at that time.

My Impressions on Sanada Maru

This is the last entry on "Sanada maru". Though I will write about something concerning the series from now on, the one mainly about the series finishes with this. I can manage to finish it until the end of the broadcast of "Onna Joshu Naotora" somehow.

真田丸真田信繁
Sanada Nobushige in "Sanada Maru"

As the series is written by Koki Mitani, there are some jokes and styles that characterises his story. And the new theories about the Sanada clan are included. Like many other Taiga drama series, some scenes are based on the historical facts and the others are fictional. Main character is SANADA Nobushige (later Yukimura) but his father Masayuki acted by Masao Kusakari is a key person who is a schemer and skillfully deceives his enemy. It's true that his character attracted and still attracts the viewers. After his death in the 38th episode, the atmosphere changes and becomes rather dull despite the scene of the Siege of Osaka.

真田丸真田父子
Nobushige (left) and his father Masayuki

And TOKUGAWA Ieyasu acted by Seiyo Uchino is well described. Not only Ieyasu, his vassals HONDA Tadakatsu (Hiroshi Fujioka) and HONDA masanobu (Masaomi Kondo) are good also. Though Kiri (Masami Nagasawa) is noisy at first, she becomes to be reliabe as the story develops. To tell the truth, the series is not heavy and the combat scenes are not so good as is usual with the script of Mitani. But The comical descriptions and the public relation succeeded to make the series gets into the news and Ueda City became to be well known thanks to it.

The Siege of Osaka

The Siege of Osaka is a series of battles fought between the Tokugawa clan and the Toyotomi clan from 1514 to 1615. The battles in 1614 are called "Fuyu no jin" (the winter campaign) and those in 1615 are called "Natsu no jin" (the summer campaign). Tokugawa Ieyasu, who became a shogun (Sei-i taishogun) in 1602 is said to have planned to destroy the Toyotomi clan but there are some theories about it.

真田丸家康3
Tokugawa Ieyasu worries how Toyotomi Hideyori deals with the issue

The immediate cause was the inscription on the bell of Hokoji temple. He insisted that there are some words that cursed him and some other words praised the Tototomi clan. Then Toyotomi Hideyori sent Okurakyo no Tsubone, nurse of his mother Chacha (Lady Yodo) to account for it. Ieyasu welcomed her and listened to her. On the other hand, he pressed KATAGIRI Katsumoto, vassal of Hideyori to explain it. As a result, Katsumoto was not trusted by the Toyotomi clan and became to serve the Tokugawa clan. Finally the negotiation between them fell apart.

真田丸秀頼2
Hideyori hopes to go out and command his army

Then Hideyori gathered many ronins, most of whom were daimyos and their vassals beaten in the Battle of Sekigahara. SANADA Yukimura was included in them. He constructed a fort Sanada maru at the south of Osaka Castle and beat some daimyos under Tokurgawa Ieyasu in the winter campaign. But Ieyasu shot a cannonball to Osaka Castle and astonished Chacha, then both sides make peace and the soldiers of the Tokugawa Army destroyed Sanada Maru and filled the moats of the castle.

真田丸45信繁
Yukimura returns in triumph after the victory of the Battle of Sanada Maru

After that, some od Hideyori's vassals were out of control and triggered off the summer campaign. In it, Toyotomi side ran out of provision and money and they were forced to fight tough battles. And Hideyori was not allowed to go out and command his army by the women in the castle. Meanwhile, many ronins were defeated and Yukimura tried to kill Ieyasu but couldn't. The final battle was about to end and he went to Yasui Shrine. When he took a rest there, he found NISHIO Munetsugu, who served Echizen Matsudaira clan and told him to bring his head to his lord. Some say that Munetsugu fought against and killed him and then found it's Yukimura. And Sen went to the headquaeter of her grandfather and father to beg for Hideyori's life but was in vain.

真田丸の図
The plan for Sanada Maru in the series

In "Sanada Maru",  SANADA Nobushige is asked to join the ronins who gather in Osaka Castle. He, GOTO Matabei, Mori Katsunaga. Chosokabe Morichika and AKASHI Teruzumi are called the Osaka Five (Osaka Goninshu) and have their own troops. He proposes to Hideyori that they should not sustain a siege but is disagreed by ODA Urakusai, uncle of Chacha. Then he plans to construct Sanada Maru to defend the southern part of the castle. He, his son Daisuke and his vassals fight against the troop of II Naomasa well and win in the winter campaign. But Ieyasu shoots a cannonball to Osaka Castle that killed some of the maids of Chacha. Then his concubine Ahca no Tsubone makes peace with Okurakyo no Tsubone ignoring Hatsu, younger sister of Chacha who also participates in the negotiation. Then Sanada Maru is destroyed and the moats are filled.
真田丸夏の陣幸村
Yukimura goes forward to attack Ieyasu

In the next year, some radical samurais dig up the moats and the ronins buy arms including guns with the lump sum to tranquillize them. But it provokes Ieyasu and  causes the battle again. Though the Toyotomi Army fight well, the Tokugawa's side is overwhelming. At last Yukimura kills himself in Yasui Shrine and it makes his brother Nobuyuki sad. His wife Haru, daughter Ume and second son Daihachi is sheltered by DATE Masamune. There are some fictional parts as the secret love of Yukimura and Chacha, the relationship with his "eternal partner" Kiri, and the assassination of the double of Tokugawa Ieyasu in the series. And also in the series, Sen is sent to his father's headquarter but doesn't beg for her husband's life.

(*) Though Kiri is modeled on a real person in the history, she is described as a woman who is free and behaves provokingly.

The Siege of Ueda in 1600

The siege of Ueda in 1600 was a battle of SANADA Masayuki and the army of TOKUGAWA Hidetada. Hidetada advanced to the west to fight against the West Army, led by ISHIDA Mitsunari. On the 2nd of September 1600, Hidetada approaches Ueda and SANADA Masayuki, lord of Ueda Castle appealed for mercy to him. But on the following day, he provoked Hidetada and they entered a state of war.

真田丸第二次上田合戦1
Sanada Masayuki (Masao Kusakari, left), Nobusgige (Masato Sakai) and TAKANASHI Naiki (Takeo Nakahara) prepare for the battle.

SANADA Nobuyuki, heir of Masayuki took the side of Tokugawa after the parting at Inubushi. But he did not want to fight against his father and younger brother Nobushige. Then he fought against them on the surface and shut himself in Toishi Castle. After that, Hidetada's soldiers began karita-rozeki (*) to lure Sanada's army out from the castle. As they anticipated, some soldiers go out and attacked by them.

真田丸36信繫
Nobushige fight against...

Hidetada's men approached the main gate of Ueda Castle but they were attacked by the army of Masayuki with matchlocks. And the vans of Hidetada's army who tried to retreat encountered the rears and it made them be at a complete loss. Besides a dam, previously constructed on the upper reaches of Kan River was broken and the water gushed out. It drowned many of Hidetada's soldiers. And a skirmish still continued in the aftermath.

 真田丸36信幸
his elder brother Nobuyuki (Yo Oizumi) but it's not earnest

In "Sanada Maru", Nobuyuki and Nobushige fight on the surface based on historical fact. After Nobuyuki shuts himself in Toishi castle, Nobushige and his vassals conduct guerrilla war and attack the bases of the Tokugawa's side thoroughly. Hidetada's soldiers are in the tight corner and to make the matter worse, Kan River raises as a result of the long rain. Much rainfall is not unusual there in autumn. Hidetada who realises that he was trapped by Masayuki leaves there and hurries to Sekigahara though he was late for the battle.

Honda Masanobu (Masaomi Kondo, left) advises Hidetada (Gen Hoshino) that the Kan river will rise because of the rain

"It needs to prepare for the battle perfectly before it begins," says Masayuki. And the Sanada Army have a party to celebrate their win. When it is in full swing, Sasuke appears and tells them that the West Army was defeated at Sekigahara. It dumbfounds all of them.

(*) Karita rozeki is a strategy that soldiers lure their enemy out of the castle by reaping crops, especially rice irregularly. It means that they have the right of controlling the territory.

4. Others

Haori

Haori is a kind of overgarement and worn as everyday clothes by daimyos and rulers. With the passage of time, it became a formal dress of common man and still is worn with hakama as formal dress.

Imagawa Yoshimoto in "Furin Kazan" wears his haori on kosode and kukuri-bakama, a kind of hakama whose hems can be tied up by pulling strings. It is the everyday clothes of high-class samurais or aristocrats.

Sodenashi-baori

Sodenashi-baori is a sleeveless haori and worn as casual wear or as travelling outfit with Tattsuke-bakama that makes the wearer move easy.

風林火山勘助袖無し羽織
In "Furin Kazan", Yamamoto Kansuke wears a pale brown sodenashi-baori and meets O-Goto hime, one of the concubines of Takeda Harunobu with her companion Ritsu.

In "Sanada Maru", Sanada Nobushige (left) wears a blue sodenashi-baori for his trip to Osaka with Uesugi Kagekatsu.

Kosode and hakama

風林火山晴信小袖袴
Kosode is the clothes that means "small sleeve" because its sleeve opening is narrow. it's the one that is called kimono nowadays. Takeda Harunobu in "Furin Kazan" usually wears kosode and hakama when he meets his vassals and it's a very casual style.

Suikan

In "Onna Joshu Naotora", Imagawa Ujizane (right) wears a suikan. It has a stand-up collar and a string to fix the collar. It was worn by common people in ancient times. But it became to be used as casual wear by aristocrats and high-class samurais. It is worn with kukuri-bakama and the sleeve can be tied by the string. Its hem is usually tucked into the hakama.

Kariginu
風林火山長尾景虎狩衣
Nagao Kagetora (left), later Uesugi Kenshin in "Furin Kazan" wears kariginu and kukuri-bakama. It is similar to suikan but its hem is not tucked into the hakama. It also has a stand-up collar and wide sleeve opening that can be tied by string. His vassal Naoe Sanetsuna wears a suit of suo. It was also worn by aristocrats and high-class samurais especially in hunting because kariginu means hunting wear.

Onna Joshu Naotora Episode 41 Kono Genkan no Katasumi ni (Manchiyo loses his chance)

A middle age man called Nobu joins Manchiyo and Manpuku but he is HONDA Masanobu, falconer of Ieyasu in reality. He once betrayed TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and participated in ikko-ikki (*) until a while ago and is disliked by HONDA Tadakatsu though they are from the same clan. Nobu is a slow worker at first and it makes Manchiyo angry but Manpuku is close to him. And in Ii-no-ya, MATSUSHITA Gentaro decides to adopt NAKANO Naohisa because Toramatsu (Manchiyo) returned to the Ii Family.

Nobu (Seiji Rokkaku, left), Manchiyo (Masaki Suda, centre) and Manpuku (Kai Inowaki, right) at the entrance of Hamamatsu Castle

In April 1575, TAKEDA Katsuyori takes up arms and Manchiyo hopes to participate in the battle. He plays cheap tricks to approach Ieyasu but he penetrates his wiles. And Nobu gets the knack of his work and becomes to place zoris in front of the vassals timely. One day OKUBO Tadayo, one of the vassals who doesn't appear the entrance at the usual time. He worries about preparing wood for umase, a kind of chavel de frise used in battlefield and Manchiyo offers his help to Tadayo to realise his wish to join the battle.

Manchiyo thinks that he can provide the wood from Ii-no-ya but there is ruled by KONDO Yasumochi now. O-Towa apologises to Ieyasu about it in her letter and then Ieyasu orders Yasumochi to provide the wood. And OKUYAMA Rokuzaemon, who now serves Yasumochi directs logging. Though he is not thought well by Yasumochi because of the dullness, he is eager to distinguish himself. So he seems to be so happy at the cutting site. But Manchiyo is ordered to remain in the castle and  he loses his control and shouts "That rotten nun!* Hang it all!"

3. Hitatare

Hitatare looks like suo but the code is not made of leather and made of silk in the 16th century. It's worn as formal wear of samurai. And when a samurai wears hitatare, he should put eboshi, a cap made of paper and wax on his head.

On New Year's Day, members of Shinano Senpo Shu includes Sanada Yukitaka (right) and Aiki Ichibei (left) wear their hitatares (Furin Kazan)

But it was worn by common men in ancient times because it's regarded as the clothes for low-class people. Around the late Heian Period, about the 11th century, it became to be worn by samurais as everyday clothes. The images below are from "Taiheiki", the twenty-ninth series of Taiga drama that describes the politics and battles in Nanbokucho jidai, the period of the Northern and Souther Courts, from 1331 to 1392. At this time, strings are passed through the sleeves and the hems of hakama and samurai who wears it can move easier because the cuffs and hems are narrowed by pulling strings.

太平記直垂袖はずし
Takauji tucks up the sleeves of his hitatare by stopping both by kikutoji, a kind of decorative cord

As the series "Taiheiki" is interesting and exciting, I would like to write about it if I have a chance.

I will write on yoroi hitatare worn under samurai's armour later.
