MATSUSHITA Gentaro

MATSUSHITA Gentaro Kiyokage is an elder brother of Matsushita Jokei and the second husband of Hiyo, mother of Toramatsu, later Naomasa.

He married Hiyo in 1574 and served his son-in-law who became a senior vassal of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. He made a son of NAKANO Naoyuki succeed the Matsushitas and his descendant became a minister of Yoita domain in Echigo, branch domain of Hikone domain ruled by the head family of the Ii clan.

In this series, his younger brother intorduced him to Shino, mother of Toramatsu and they get married. Later he adopts Toramatsu as his son to make him avoid the danger of being a member of the Iis.

O-Dai no kata

O-Dai no kata was a mother of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, wife of Tokugawa Hirotada and daughter of MIZUNO Tadamasa who ruled Chita, Owari.

As her father also ruled a part of Mikawa, she married Hirotada, lord of Okazaki Castle in Mikawa in 1541. and gave birth to Takechiyo, later Ieyasu in 1543. However, she was forced to be divorced because her elder brother Hiromoto served the Odas. She remarried HISAMATSU Toshikatsu, lord of Sakabe Castle in 1547 and had six children though she continued corresponding with Takechiyo. 

After the Battle of Okehazama, Motoyasu (former Takechiyo) allied himself with ODA Nobunaga. Then he becomes to live with her and made Toshikatsu and his three sons between her serve him. In 1567, he changed his name Tokugawa Ieyasu and served TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi after the Honnnoji Incident. And in 1600, he won the Battle of Sekigahara and became shogun. Then she met the Emperor Goyozei and Kodaiin (Kita no Mandokoro) and told them that he has no hostility to the Toyotomi clan.

She became a nun after the death of Toshikatsu and called herself Dentsuin. She died in 1602 and was buried in Dentsuin Temple in Edo.

She was posthumously awarded the court rank of ju ichi i in 1850.

In this series, she is described as a fond mother of Ieyasu though being harsh to his wife Sena. Their strained relationship influences the future of Sena and her son Nobuyasu.

The members of Ryuun-to, group of the thieves of Ryuunmaru. All of them are fictional figures.

Mogura (*), who is good at civil engineering and supports Ryuunmaru well.

HONDA Tadakatsu

HONDA Heihachiro Tadakatsu was born in Mikawa in 1548 as the eldest son of his father Tadataka. He was brought up by his uncle Tadazane after his father's death and became to  serve TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, MATSUDAIRA Motonobu at that time.

He participated in fifty-seven battles in his life and was never injured himself in them. He distinguished in many of them includes the Battle of Sekigahara. When ODA Nobunaga was killed in the Honnoji Incident, he advises Ieyasu who was heading to Kyoto to return to Mikawa by way of Iga, so-called Iga goe (*). After the Battle of Sekigahara, he became the lord of Kuwana Castle in Ise, current Mie.

He had two sons and five daughters. One of his daughters was called Ina (Komatsu hime) and married SANADA Nobuyuki. And his spear called Tonbokiri is one of the Three Great Spears of Japan.

In this series. he is described as a man who is loyal to Ieyasu and supports him together with other vassals as SAKAI Tadatsugu and ISHIKAWA Kazumasa.

(*) Because Iga is mountainous and the it's hard to capture or kill them there. And local samurais in the province assumed an attitude to protect Ieyasu.

SAKAI Tadatsugu

SAKAI Tadatsugu was one of senior vassals (Shitenno) of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. He served him when he was a hostage of the Imagawas and helped him well in many battles.


He showed his true ability especially in the battles against the Takedas and negotiated with TAKEDA Shingen when he invaded into Suruga. He is said have concerned the execution of Nobuyasu, heir of Ieyasu but it is denied in some of recent studies. And after the Hoonoji Incident, he was ordered to conquer Shinano, former territory of ODA Nobunaga but ended in failure because of the betrayal of some rulers.


After ISHIKAWA Kazumasa betrayed Ieyasu and served TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi, he became the most important vassal of Ieyasu but retired in 1586 due to his age and eye disease. He died in 1596 at the age of 70.


In this series, he is one of the vassals of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and attacked by local rulers who take the side of IMAGAWA Ujizane. He negotiates with Takeda Shingen after the invasion into Suruga and devotes himself to his lord Ieyasu.

Haru (Hayakawa Dono)

Hayakawa Dono was a daughter of HOJO Ujiyasu and a wife of IMAGAWA Ujizane. Her real name is unknown.

She married Ujizane after the alliance of Kai, Suruga and Sagami in 1554 was formed. When TAKEDA Shingen invaded into Suruga in 1568, she escaped to Kakegawa Castle in Totomi with her husband. After that they moved to Izu and then Odawara where the Hojos are based. At Odawara she gave birth to the eldest son, later IMAGAWA Norimochi.

In 1571, her father Ujiyasu died and the alliance of Kai and Sagami becomes revived. As it prohibited Ujizane from returning to Suruga, she got angry and they were sheltered by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. They lived near Hamamatsu and had three sons there.

She is thought to have lived in Kyoto with Ujizane around 1590 and moved to Edo in 1612. She died in 1613, two years earlier than that of Ujizane. Though she had bitter experiences in her life, she never divorced her husband.

In this series, she is described as a woman who loves Ujizane and respect her grandmother-in-law Jukeini. She appeals to the Hojos, her parent's home to help the Imagawas betrayed by many vassals.

YAMAGATA Masakage

YAMAGATA Masakage was one of the vassals of TAKEDA Harunobu (Shingen). Like BABA Nobuharu, he was one of Takeda Shitenno (The Four Braves of Takeda Harunobu). He is said to have been of small stature(*).

He was a younger brother (or nephew) of OBU Toramasa, one of the senior vassals of Takeda Nobutora and his son Harunobu. He served as attendant of Harunobu first and became to win fame in battles.

In 1565, his brother (or uncle) Toramasa was implicated in the scandal of Takeda Yoshinobu because he was a tutor of him. Then he was executed and his family died out. But he succeeded the YAMAGATA family and called himself Yamagata Masakage.

The red armour worn by his soldier was widely-known among daimyos and modeled on by the Iis and SANADA Yukimura (Nobushige). He participated in the Battle of Nagashino in 1575 and died at the age of 47 in the pursuit battle.

In this series, he is described as one of a senior vassal of Harunobu. He ofter visits Sunpu and schemes the vassals of the Imagawas to take the side of the Takedas.

(*) In Taiga Drama series, the actors who play his role are rather tall.

ODA Nobunaga

ODA Nobunaga was one of the famous daimyos in the Sengoku Period. He held real power of governing Japan in 1570s but was killed by AKECHI Mitsuhide, one of his vassals in 1582.

He was born as the eldest son of ODA Nobuhide who was the lord of Nagoya Castle. he was considered as a fool because he was really eccentric. He married No hime, daughter of SAITO Dosan and beat IMAGAWA Yoshimoto at the Battle of Okehazama. While he extended his power in Owari and became the lord of the province.

Then he captured Mino (current Gifu) ruled by Saito Yoshitatsu but the relationship between he and Nobunaga became worse and built Gifu Castle after the fall of the Saitos. Besides he had many battles and punished those who were against or betrayed him severely. He beat Azai Nagamasa, his brother-in-law at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570 and burned Enryakuji Temple that took the side of the Azais and their allies.

In 1574 he became an aristocrat and on the following year, he defeated TAKEDA Katsuyori at the Battle of Nagashino. Before it, he exiled ASHIKAGA Yoshiaki, the 15th shogun of Muromachi Government who opposed him from Kyoto. And he was based in Azuchi where is near Lake Biwa and plans to conquer Chugoku region ruled by the Moris. But on the way he was killed by Akechi Mitsuhide at Honnnoji Temple.

He allied with TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and fought together in the battles such as the Battle of Nagashino. Ieyasu was said to have allied him after the Battle of Okehazama. Besides he occupied Sakai, a corporate town to acquire the vested rights of manufacturing guns and loosened the regulations in commerce. He loved Western style goods. 

In this series, he is described as a man who is so severe. He applies pressure on Ieyasu who is his vassal rather than ally in actuality and requires him to make his son Nobuyasu marry his daughter Toku hime.

TAKEDA Shingen (Harunobu)

TAKEDA Shingen (Harunobu) was one of famous daimyos in the Sengoku period. He was a ruler of Kai and Shinano who conquered Suruga and finally had an ambition to govern Japan.

He was born as heir of TAKEDA Nobutora but was treated coldly and exiled him to Suruga. After that he became the head of the Takedas and invaded into Shinano in earnest. He brought the enemies to his knees and fought against UESUGI Kenshin in the Battles of Kawanakajima. After that he stopped conquering Shinano and territoralised the western part of Kozuke.

On the other hand, the alliance between the Takedas and the Imagawas became unstable and he disinherited his heir Yoshinobu, who supported the Imagawas because his wife is from the clan. It worsened their relationship and after the death of Jukeini, grandmother of IMAGAWA Ujizane, he attacked Suruga. It caused the end of the Imagawas as Sengoku daimyo. But he came into collision with TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and finally made peace with Ujizane.

In 1572, he left Kai to responded the order of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki to execute ODA Nobunaga but on the way he died before achieving his ambition. His death remained secret for three years and his illegitimate son Katsuyori succeeded him. 

In this series, he is described as a man who destroyed the Imagawa clan and redrew the power map of Suruga and Totomi. His army beat Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Battle of Mikatagahara and burned Ii-no-ya.

OSAWA Mototane

OSAWA Mototane was a vassal of the Imagawas a lord of Horie Castle that stood near Lake Hamana. He was born in 1526.

In 1568, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu invaded into Totomi and captured some castles includes Hikima Castle (Hamamatsu Castle). In the following year, he brought the Ii-no-ya Three over to his side and attacked Horie Castle but Mototane never surrendered. At last Ieyasu made peace with him in exchange for serving him. The ownership of his fief was approved. After that Ieyasu attacked Kakegawa Castle where IMAGAWA Ujizane was sheltered.

Mototane then serve Ieyasu and participated in some battles. He died in 1605. His son Motoie became a Koke, high rank Hatamoto (direct vassals of shogun) for his mother was from the Imperial family.

In this series, he is describes as a vassal of the Imagawas and opposes the Iis over the castle in Kiga. As he was so busy managing other castles, the castle was left to the Iis.

『西郷どん』復習の投稿をアップしている一方で、『鎌倉殿の13人』の感想も書いています。そしてパペットホームズの続編ですが、これも『鎌倉殿の13人』終了後に三谷氏にお願いしたいところです。

他にも国内外の文化や歴史、刑事ドラマについても、時々思い出したように書いています。ラグビー関連も週1またはそれ以上でアップしています。2019年、日本でのワールドカップで代表は見事ベスト8に進出し、2022年秋には強豪フランス代表、そしてイングランド代表との試合も予定されています。そして2023年は次のワールドカップ、今後さらに上を目指してほしいものです。
