TOKUGAWA Ieyasu in His Youth

At the setout, I tell you that the broadcast of "Kirin ga Kuru" will be suspended for a short while because the spread of COVID-19 prevented the cast and the crew from shooting. During the time, the famous scenes and short stories about shooting of the series set in he Sengoku period will be broadcast instead. The broadcast schedule of NHK is as below.

Seiyō Uchino as Tokugawa Ieyasu in "Sanada Maru"

TOKUGAWA Ieyasu is known as a samurai who established the Edo Bakufu (Tokugawa shogunate) not only in Japan but in foreign countries also. He is one of the remarkable figures in the Sengoku period is acted by various actors in Taiga Drama series. However, he went through a lot of hardships when he was young. His father MATSUDAIRA Hirotada was killed or died of illness when he was a child who was called Takechiyo. Little Takechiyo became a hostage of the ODA clan when he was 3 years old. After that he was taken hostage by IMAGAWA Yoshimoto who ruled Suruga as daimyo. He was educated by TAIGEN Sessai and Yoshimoto found him useful.

In 1555, he celebrated his genpuku (coming of age) and called himself MATSUDAIRA Motoyasu. He was granted to use the portion of ”Yoshimoto". In the same year, he married Sena (Tsukiyama dono*), relative of Yoshimoto. But after the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, he returned to Okazaki Castle in Mikawa, the province where he was born. It is said that he betrayed the Imagawa clan but recent research has shown that he returned to Mikawa to prepare the battle against the army of ODA Nobunaga as an officer of Yoshimoto's army. And it is also said he who was chased by Nobunaga's army tried to commit suicide but the enemies didn't chase and attack him. (It may be true that he tried to kill himself but was stopped by a priest and persuaded to survive)

After that he formed an alliance with ODA Nobunaga and made his son Nobuyasu marry Toku hime who was born between Nobunaga and his concubine. Before it, he changed his name into TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. But there were still lots of difficulties lying ahead. He came into collision with his son Nobuyasu and his clan was troubled with internal strife. Nobuyasu was finally ordered to commit hara-kiri and his mother Tsukiyama-dono was executed in 1579. Moreover, he had more bitter experiences to govern Japan as shogun.

(*) She is said to have been a niece of Yoshimoto. "Tsukiyama dono" means Lady or Madame Tsukiyama. The name comes from Tsukiyama, a place in Okazaki.

Ayame

She is a fictional figure but is modeled on a daughter of NIINO Samanosuke who actually existed.

In this series, she has two younger sisters and makes them marry the vassals of the Imagawa clan and the Hojo clan. She is good at doing embroidery (*) and her works are sold by SETO Hokyu who finally marries her. As the eldest daughter of the Niino Family, she sometimes talks with Naotora (O-Towa) and lives with Shino and Toramatsu after the death of Naochika.

(*) First of all, Yasuko Mitsuura who acts her likes doing embroidery.

AKECHI Mitsuhide

AKECHI Hyuganokami Mitsuhide was a vassal of ODA Nobunaga. Though having served Nobunaga, he attacked him stayed at Honnoji Temple in Kyoto on the 2nd of June, 1582.

The details of his descent is unknown but he is said to have been from the Toki clan. After the death of SAITO Dosan whom he served, He went to Echizen (current northern part of Fukui) and served the Asakura clan who ruled there. Around 1570, he became to serve Oda Nobunaga and distinguished himself both in battles and politics.

However, he is said to have been at odds with Nobunaga and it was one of the reasons why he attacked Nobunaga who stayed at Honnoji Temple with few vassals. Other than that, there are many reasons why he did so and a letter found recently says that he was eager to reestablish Muromachi Government destroyed by Nobunaga.

Anyway he attacked the temple and Nobunaga killed himseld then. After that, HASHIBA Hideyoshi who knew the news returned from Chugoku region and beat him and his army at Tennozan. He was killed by a farmer during the escape to Sakamoto Castle.

He had a knowledge of how to perform a tea ceremony and was good at making waka (poem). He made a poem that suggests his decision a few days before the Honnoji Incident.

No hime, wife of Nobunaga is said to have been related to him.

In this series, he is a loyal vassal of Nobunaga and pressures SAKAI Tadatsugu into accepting that Nobuyasu communicates with the TAKEDA clan secretly. But at last he betrays Nobunaga and attacks him.

TAKEDA Katsuyori

TAKEDA Katsuyori was a son of Takeda Shingen and suceeded his father in 1573. He was born between Shingen and Suwa Goryonin, daughter of SUWA Yorishige.

He was born in 1546 as the fourth son of Shingen. He became the head of the Suwa clan at first and had eight vassals. His first battle was the attack on Minowa Castle, Kozuke in 1563. In 1565, Yoshinobu, his half brother and a heir of Shingen was imprisoned in Tokoji Temple. For such a reason, he became a heir (*) and married Ryukatsuin Dono, daughter of ODA Nobunaga.

As Shingen died in 1573, he took over the Takeda clan and fought a series of battles against Oda Nobunaga, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu, UESUGI Kagekatsu and HOJO Ujikuni. Especially in the Battle of Nagashino, he fought against the allied forces of Nobunaga and Ieyasu and lost many of his vassals. And in 1577, he once helped Uesugi Kagetora who is from the Hojo clan in Otate no ran,  a riot between Uesugi Kagekatsu and Hojo Ujimasa over the headship of the Uesugi clan. At last he mediated between them but they went to war again in his absence because of his return to Kai. The side of Kagekatsu won and he made his half sister marry Kagekatsu. But it made the relationship between him and the Hojo clan became tense.

In 1579, he fought against Hojo Ujikuni and Ujimasa. In 1581, he constructed a new castle called Shinpu Castle in Nirasaki but Nobunaga and Ieyasu schemed to make his vassals betray him. He was surrounded by the daimyos who have hostile relations with him and committed hara-kiri at the Battle of Tenmokuzan. Later Tokugawa Ieyasu built a temple called Keitokuin to mourn him.

In this series, he is described as the head of the Takeda clan who is defeated in the Battle of Nagashino. Though he tries to make his clan with the Uesugi clan to recover from the discouraging situation, he is forced to committ suicide because of the betrayals of his vassals at last.

(*) Shingen's second son was blind and became a priest and third son died young.

HONDA Masanobu (Nobu)

HONDA Sadonokami Masanobu was a vassal of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. He served Ieyasu as falconer at first and opposed him when Mikawa Ikko Ikki, uprising of the believers of Jodo Shinshu occurred.

After the uprising was put down,  he served MATSUNAGA Hisahide, daimyo of Yamato, current Nara. Later he wandered the provinces and served Ieyasu again mediated by OKUBO Tadayo. After the death of ODA Nobunaga, Ieyasu annexed the former territory of the Takeda clan and he administrated both Kai and Shinano.

He was appointed as Sadonokami in 1586 and became a daimyo of Tamanawa, Sagami when Ieyasu moved to Kanto region after the Siege of Odawara in 1590. In 1600, he joined Tokugawa Hidetada's army but they were hindered by the flood and the maneuver of SANADA Masayuki when they advanced to Sekigahara and delayed.

After the battle of  Sekigahara, he appealed to the Imperial court to make Ieyasu become a shogun. After the retirement of Ieyasu, he served Hidetada. After the death of Ieyasu, he retired and died in June 1616. He was succeeded by his heir Masazumi though he fell from power later.

He didn't achieve military exploit but was good at strategies. And he was closed to Ieyasu and was taken into his confidence. Besides he did not hope the increase of his fief and admonished Masazumi to do so but he didn't.

In this series, he is described as a wise man though he is ordered to manage the zoris of Ieyasu's vassals when he serves him again. He is also an adviser of young Manchiyo and Manpuku.

SAKAKIBARA Yasumasa

SAKAKIBARA Yasumasa was one of the superior vassals of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. Though his family served the Sakai Family, not the Matsudaira clan but he became to serve TOKUGAWA Ieyasu who is descended from the clan.

He was versed in letters and arms and became Ieyasu's page in 1560. Though he had an elder brother called Kiyomasa, he became a heir and succeeded his father Nagamasa. When he celebrated his genpuku, he was given the letter of "Yasu", one of the letters from the name of Ieyasu.

He renders distinguished services in some battled includes the Battle of Nagashino. Especially he performed great exploits in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1585. After Ieyasu moved to Kanto region, he became the lord of Tatebayashi Castle in Kozuke and improved the infrastructure of the town such as building an embankment.

In 1600, he joined the army of TOKUGAWA Hidetada and arrives late at the Battle of Sekigahara. Some say that he was ordered to move to Mito but he refused he performed no exploits in the battle and it was easy for him to go to Edo from Tatebayashi. He died of folliculitis in 1606.

He was closed to HONDA Tsdakatsu, who was the same age with him and II Naomasa. 

In this series, he is described as a man who is understanding and calm. He is a faithful man and sometimes mediates between Ieyasu and Manchiyo.

TOKUGAWA Nobuyasu

TOKUGAWA Nobuyasu was a heir of Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was born in March, 1559 and became a hostage of the Imagawas but soon moved to Okazaki Castle.

After the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, his father Ieyasu (MATSUDAIRA Motoyasu at that time) allied himself with ODA Nobunaga and he married Toku hime, daughter of Nobugnaga when he was nine years old. He became the lord of Okazaki Castle after Ieyasu moved to Hamamatsu.

He participated in some battles includes the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. But in 1579, he was forced to move to Horie Castle and then Futamata Castle. Then he was ordered to commit hara-kiri there and was buried in Wakamiya Shrine in Okazaki.

According to a theory, he was a violent man and it makes Nobunaga, father of Toku hime feel unhappy. But there is another theory that he was on bad terms with Ieyasu and that's why he executed him however he regretted it later. Ieyasu was succeeded by Hidetada who was born between him and his concubine Saigo no Tsubone finally.

In this series, he is described as an honest and brave man and is pleased with his parents, especially his mother Sena (Tsukiyama Dono).

NAKANO Naohisa

He is thought to be a brother of NAKANO Naoyuki but some say that he is one of the sond of MATSUSHITA Gentaro. The details of him are unknown.

In this series, he is a younger brother of NAKANO Naoyuki and is instructed swordsmanship by him. He studies at Ryotanji Temple and makes friends with II Toramatsu (Manchiyo) and ONO Inosuke (Manpuku) . As Toramatsu, who was adopted by MATSUSHITA Gentaro returns to the Ii Family, he is adopted by Gentatro instead.

ONO Tomoyuki (Inosuke, Manpuku)

He was a son of ONO Genba (Tomonao), grandson of Ono Izuminokami Masanao and nephew of Ono Tajimanokami Masatsugu (Michiyoshi).

His father Genba was killed in the Battle of Okehazama. And his uncle Masatsugu was executed by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu but he served the Ii clan all his life. He was given a name Tomoyuki on his genpuku ceremony after he had become a page of TOKUGAWA Ieyasu. After that he served II Naomasa and participated in many battles.

His grandson served Annaka Domain ruled by Ii Naokatsu, son of Naomasa.

In this series, he is a son of Genba and Natsu, sister of Shino who is a mother of Naomasa. After the death of Ii Naochika, he and his mother move to the house of NIINO Samanosuke and is brought up there. When Ii-no-ya is attacked by the Takeda Army, he escapes to Kawana with his mother, Toramatsu (later Naomasa) and Shino. And in 1574, he becomes to serve Ieyasu with Toramatsu.

II Naomasa (Toramatsu, Manchiyo)

II Naomasa was a son of II Naochika and an adoptes son of Ii Naotora. And he was a father of Ii Naokatsu and Naotaka. He was born in 1561 and lost his father about two years later.

Then he was guarded by Naotora, daughter of his cousin Naomori who was the head of the Ii clan. He was called Toramatsu in his childhood and was brought up in the house of NIINO Samanosuke where he lived with his mother Hiyo. But he was forced to escape to Hioraiji temple in Mikawa because ONO Tajimanokami Masatsugu sought his life. Then Hiyo remarried MATSUSHITA Gentaro Kiyokage and he was adopted.

In 1574, his relatives recommended him to serve TOKUGAWA Ieyasu and changed his family name back to his original family name Ii. And he was given his new name Manchiyo by him. He distinguished himself in the battles as the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, the Siege of Ueda in 1585 and the Siege of Odawara in 1590.

He celebrated his genpuku in 1582 and called himself Naomasa. He wore red armour in the battles and terrified his enemies as "Ii no akaoni", that means a red demon of the Iis (*). His red armour modeled on that of YAMAGATA Masakage,vassal of TAKEDA Shingen. After the Siege of Odawara, he became the lord of Minowa Castle in Kozuke and then Takasaki Castle.

He participated in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and was shot in the right elbow (or right shoulder, left arm) while fighting against the army of SHIMAZU Yoshihiro. After the battle, he negotiated with Ieyasu how to deal with the daimyos who took the side of ISHIDA Mitsunari. Besides he made efforts in establishing Tokugawa shogunate. He was ordered to protect the Imperial court and moved to Hikone where is near Kyoto.

After that, his wound sustained in the Battle of Sekigahara got worse and died in February 1602. He was a man with various anecdotes.

In this series, he is guarded by Naotora and goes to the hidden village in Kawana. But as Ii-no-ya was attacked by Takeda Shingen and the soldiers of the Imagawas seek him, he is taken to Horaiji by OKUYAMA Rokuzaemon. Then he is adopted by MATSUSHITA Gentaro who already married his mother Shino. After that he hopes to serve Tokugawa Ieyasu with his cousin Inosuke but thei first job is managing the footwears of the vassals of Ieyasu.

(*) Suda plays a role of red demon in a CM of mobile phone.

他にも国内外の文化や歴史、刑事ドラマについても、時々思い出したように書いています。ラグビー関連も週1またはそれ以上でアップしています。2019年、日本でのワールドカップで代表は見事ベスト8に進出し、2022年秋には強豪フランス代表、そしてイングランド代表との試合も予定されています。そして2023年は次のワールドカップ、今後さらに上を目指してほしいものです。
