At that moment, NAOE Sanetsuna makes his horse run and approaches Kansuke. Kansuke who tries to kill Masatora takes a toss and his helmet falls off from his head. He still keeps on fighting despite being covered all over with wounds. He also sees Masatora on white horse far away and he cannot approach him any more. Though he tries to approach him, he makes his horse run to the headquarter.

"My Lord, you win the battle."
Against their expectations, the heads of Nobishige and Torasada are taken back to Shingen's headquarter. He sheds tears ovdr the death of Nobushige who agreed with his idea and appreciated him when he decided to exile his father Nobutora. At that moment, KOMAI Masatake finds somebody who runs to them from far away. It is Denbée who carries the headless body of Kansuke on his back.
"Here comes Yamamoto Kansuke!"

"Not only protect, but win also."

 On the 9th of September in 1561, the Uesugi Army in Mt. Saijo confronts the Takeda Army in Kaizu Castle. On the day, Kansuke sees falling rain and likens his life to war. He plans to divide the army into two and send one of them to Mt. Saijo to drive the Uesugi Army out to intercept them at Kawanakajima. But O-Fuku, the mysterious old woman who takes care of HARA Toratane goes to Mt. Saijo. She tells USAMI Sadamitsu that Kawanakajima will be covered with a thick fog in exchange for the money whose amount is higher that that of Kansuke. And Kansuke insists that they should go to the front early to avoid the thick fog in the morning and depart for there at unokoku, 6:00 am. On the other hand, Sadamitsu proposes his plan to Masatora that they should climb down Mt. Saijo to baffle their enemy's design.
 
He advises to leave their flags and bale fires to deceive Shingen's vassals. Beside they see the amount of smoke come from cooking is unusually large. They realises the Takeda army will depart for Kawanakajima soon because it means Shingen's soldiers dine to prepare for the battle. The troops of OBU, BABA, KŌSAKA, SANADA and AIKI are ordered to depart for Mt. Saijo. After that an entire army have a meal and Kansuke talks with SANADA Yukitaka and AIKI Ichibei during eating. All of them were the enemies of Shingen before but their destinies were changed by him. As he join the detached force, Yukitaka says there is a possibility that they cannot meet again. And Ichibei says he becomes spirited for the first time since the battle of Unnokuchi Castle.


Shingen and Nobushige dine together and he tells his younger brother not to call him my lord but brother today. Nobushige says that he admonished his son Nobutoyo that he should not betray Shingen but he hopes that the world will be peaceful and such admonition will be unnecessary. Then Shingen tells him to survive to realise it. And he hands Nobushige the robe of O- Fujin on which dharani (*) written by himself and tells his brother that it will protect him at critical moment. The detatched force depart for Mt. Saijo at midnight and the mountain becomes to be covered by the thick fog.

However the force find that their scouts are killed there. And Yukitaka suspects that no one of the Uesugi Army is there. At that moment, Shinome feels uneasy but all she can do is trusting her husband and tells Hazuki it is the battle of woman. The Uesugi Army march to Chikuma River (**) and the main body of the Takeda Army departs for Kawanakajima. Then they use kakuyoku-no-jin, the formation that encloses the enemy but Masatora and his army has never appeared yet. Kansuke says they may be delayed because of the fog but Shingen tells him that it doesn't profit his side only.


Then one of the Mukade-shu informs that some horsemen appear far away. They are Masatora's men and use kurumagakari-no-jin, the formation that attacks enemy that is disadvantageous for Shingen. The detached force learn that Mt. Saijo is quite empty and it needs to gain time until they reach Kawanakajima. Kansuke acknowledges his failure but Shingen says to him to keep calm. He remembers "Be a real strategist", the words of ITAGAKI Nobukata, and protect the headquarter with musketeers but the soldiers become confused.


Nobushige sallies out with his soldiers to gain time. Though he carries horo on his back but he takes off it on his way to Masatora's headquarter. He orders KASUGA Gennojō, one of his vassals to hand it to Nobutoyo (***). He says he has does not regret losing his life but being taken the horo. Nobushige then advances and crosses swords and spears with the soldiers of Masatora and MOROZUMI Torasada catches up with him. Nobushige is finally killed by KAKIZAKI Kageie and Torasada is killed by the Uesugi Army also. Their deaths are informed to Shingen soon.

On the 16th of August in 1561, UESUGI Masatora, who changed his name from NAGAO Kagetora takes up arms. In Kōfu, some of the vassals of TAKEDA Shingen advise him to prepare for the battle but he takes a wait-and-see situation because haste makes waste. And his son Yoshinobu reminds Kansuke to protect Kaizu Castle then he answers him that Masatora never attcks the castle. Besides taking the castle cannot lure Shingen toward  him and it's the last way Masatora will adopt.


Masatora's vassals also say that they can take Kaizu Castle but Masatora emphasises that he does not like to torture Harunobu and his army. He plans to march from Hachimanpara to Mt. Saijo via Chikuma River. Naoe Sanetsuna feels unsafe with it but USAMI Sadamitsu says that Shingen will not attack them on the march but in direct opposition. Their march is seen by KŌSAKA (KASUGA) Toratsuna who stays in Kaizu Castle.

 
Shingen who is informed that Masatora was based in Mt. Saijo. He orders Toratsuna to take up arms. Yoshinobu who participates in the battle remembers that his moriyaku OBU Toramasa taught him what is Fudō Myo-ō (Acalanatha) in his childhood. Sanjō Fujin worries about his son and enters the room of Fudo Myo-ō and sits by her husband. Shingen tells her that he has given her anxiety until now. Then she asks him to win the battle if he thinks so. 25 years has passed since their marriage.


Kansuke trains his skill of spearmanship in preparation for the battle. At that moment, he is called "Father", not "Darling" by Ritsu for the first time. She declares that she will marry Toratsuna and take the charge during his absence. And then, Kansuke and his followers are sent off by the women including Ritsu and O-Kuma. On the 18th of August, Kansuke visits the tomb of Yu-u hime and tells his dead mistress that Katsuyori will participate in his first battle. Then light shines and the illusion of Yu-u hime appears. She tells him in a sad voice,
"Kansuke, you should not do that."
After that Katsuyori visits his mother's tomb accompanied by AKIYAMA Nobutomo but Kansuke proposes to him that he should enter Takashima Castle in Suwa for logistics support. Though Katsuyori is dissatisfied with it, Kansuke tells him that Shingen ordered so.


At the headquarter of Shingen in Ueda, Shinano, he appreciates the method Kansuke took. After he goes out of the room, Shingen asks KOMAI Masatake whether he is frightened or not and Masatake says that he intends to devote himself to Harunobu. Shingen admires Masatake who has served him for long years and tells him that she should live long. After that the troops of the rulers in Shinano join the Takeda Army. On the 24th of August, the army is based on Amenomiya to cut off the retreat of the Uesugi Army. Both Shingen and Masatora think that haste makes waste. The Uesugi Army still stay in the headquarters of Mt. Saijo but some soldiers steal food to supply their provisions.


On the 29th of August, Shingen and his army enter Kaizu Castle. KAKIZAKI Kageie proposes attacking the castle but is persuaded that it means playing into the enemy's hands. At Kaizu Castle, Shingen orders Kansuke and BABA Nobuharu to form a scheme though they oftern disagree in opinion. At that time, AIKI Ichibei informs them HARA Toratane, who became missing after the attack on Warigatake Castle is alive. Kansuke visits him in a farmhouse and in the entrance he finds a helmet of Toratane. Then he sees him wounded and lies down in the house. He is looked after by a mysterious old woman called O-Fuku. She asks him for money whenever Kansuke asks her something. At last he asks her when Kawanakajima will be covered with a thick for. O-Fuku who sees the clouds and says it's tomorrow.

UESUGI Masatora is angry with NARITA Nagayasu who sees his parade after succeeding the position of Kanto Kanrei from his horsebeck. Then Masatora forces him get off from the horse and hits him. As a result, Nagayasu withdraws troops from the headquarter of Masatora with other rulers though his wife Ise still remains there as hostage.


Masatora says that he was rude to him and Ise but she says that she will suffer for her husband's betray but won't pay for his impoliteness. She declares that his ancestor exchange salutes with Minamoto-no Yoshiie (*) from his horseback and other rulers didn't betray Masatora but abandoned him. Besides she blames him why Kagetora who venerates Vaisravana doesn't understand other people's feelings and "Heaven's judgement" he says is nothing but his self-conceit.


Masatora stops Kakizaki Kageie who tries to slash her and receives her words as a valuable lesson to him. Then he learns that TAKEDA Harunobu takes up arms and retreats to Echigo. He sends Ise to Oshi Castle to stop Nagayasu from supporting the Hojo clan by gaining his gratitude. In May 1561, Warigatake Castle falls but Hara Toratane who is wounded becomes unknown. and Denbée is given three handfuls of gold nuggets as a reward for having incited betrayers during the attack.


At Odawara castle, Hojo Ujiyasu treats his vassals to sake and grilled seafood to celebrate the retreat of Masatora. SHIMIZU Yoshimasa appreciates the attack of Harunobu but Ujiyasu tells him that he will be his enemy someday. Then he sees a grilled clam and says.
"The kai is hard to surrrender us, he is foxy man." (**)
At the same time. SANADA Yukitaka talks about the battle at Kawanakajima is coming again. he says that Harunobu cannnot beat Masatora by stratagem. Then KAWAHARA Takamasa appears and tells him about the death of NAGANO Narimasa.


Kansuke introduces Ritsu to KASUGA Toratsuna and he is pleased with Ritsu. But he is not keen to succeed Kansuke. Then he advises Toratsuna if they have some sons, one of them can revive the family.  In Echigo, Masatora teaches his nephew Unomatsu (later Kagekatsu) calligraphy. Momo hime who sees it thinks that he has changed. Masatora says that he knows how to express affection.


Heizō comes home and make his family prepare for the battle. Hisa persuades him that he should return again. On the 14th of August, Masatora and his army departs for Kawanakajima but only Heizō looks depressed. It is signaled to Harunobu by beacon and he gathers his vassals to hold a council of war. He asks Kansuke whether Toratsuna can hold Kaizu Castle or not.
"The castle never falls, sir,"says he.  

(*) A samurai from Minamoto clan who suppressed eastern Japan in the 11th century.
(**) It's a play in words. The word kai means the province ruled Harunobu and a Japanese word that means shell or shellfish. And the word "foxy" is expressed "kuenai" in Japanese and the word also means "unsavory". Ujiyasu attempts to say that Harunobu of Kai is foxy and he is like a shellfish that is unsavory.

The attempted assassination of Shingen is thought to be plotted by Jukeini and Nagao clan or MURAKAMI Yoshikiyo. Kansuke dares to tell Shingen that he failed to catch the spy who brought Chōkyū to Kai (*). Shingen doubts that IMAGAWA Yoshimoto plans to kill him and warns that Imagawa's army will invade Kai while his army makes an expedition to Shinano. Chōkyū escapes from the temple where he was confined but is killed by OBU Toramasa on his way to Suruga. In Echigo, USAMI Sadamitsu learns that Heizō failed in inciting Chōkyū to kill Shingen. He thinks it's hard for him to act as spy and makes him his direct vassal. Heizō thinks about Chōkyū’s consideration for him and Hisa’s devotion to her children.


In October 1559, NAGAO Kagetora rerurns to Echigo from Kyoto and tells UESUGI Norimasa that ASHIKAGA Yoshiteru, the 13th shogun approves his right of succession to the Uesugi clan. However, it needs to fight against the Hojo clan and make the rulers in Kanto region obey him for it. And the New Year 1560 begins. Yoshimoto declares that he will conquer Owari within the year in front of his son Ujizane and his vassals. IHARA Yukimasa says that it makes him tremble (**). Yoshimoto is already succeeded by Ujizane and plans to go to Kyoto after conquering the province and lets his mother Jukeini go back there.


About that time, a monk called Tentaku visits Kai and tells Shingen that ODA Nobunaga is not a fool as rumoured and good at working out a plot. It seems that he is sent to Kai by Nobunaga himself. As his army is smaller than that of the Imagawa clan, he may attack Yoshimoto directly. At the same time, one of Yoshimoto's vassals betrays him and is ordered to commit hara-kiri and then he gives trustworthy herediatry vassals important posts. Meanwhile Kansuke, Denbée and Takichi consider how the Oda's army attacks him. As the route is mountainous, they guess he will attack his enemy in Okehazama, a valley plain.


Ritsu asks them why they worry about Suruga and Kansuke answers because the province is important for Kai. Then he meets Yoshimoto mediated by Yukimasa and advises him to capture Kiyosu Castle because Nobunaga will not hold it. However Yoshimoto who never believe him departs for Owari with his army and enter Ōtaka Castle that stands near Okehazama. Besides he decides to take a rest in Okehazama. After that Kansuke makes a second visit to Suruga on the pretext of telling Shingen's words to Jukeini.


Kansuke tells her that the affair of Chōkyū was unavoidable and Jukeini accepts it. And kansuke also says that he hopes Yoshimoto does not enter Ōtaka Castle because Nobunaga can attack there easily but it is too late. Jukeini realises that Kansuke told Yoshimoto to capture Kiyosu Castle on purpose because he is always against his words (***). At that moment it begins raining. He says it is a welcome rain and leaves Suruga.


In Okehazama, the rain makes Yoshimoto's army relax completely. When it stops raining, Yoshimoto goes out of the verandah of the temple they stay at and is killed by the attack of Nobunaga in another moment. His head is brought to Suruga by OKABE Motonobu after negotiating with Nobunaga's vassal. It makes the Imagawa clan sad and Aya, wife of TAKEDA Yoshinobu grieves her father's death. OBU Toramasa suspects Kansuke's frequent visit to Suruga but he brazens it out that he had no intention. On the other hand, MATSUDAIRA Motoyasu who serves Yoshimoto holds Okazaki Castle, his family's castle and is rumoured that he betrays the Imagawa clan. 8 years later, Shingen attacks Suruga.


(*) In reality, it is Denbée and Takichi who make Heizō escape.

(***) In short, Yoshimoto is entrapped by Kansuke who knows his character well. And the rain is quite a welcome rain for him and Shingen. But his behaviour irritates Obu Toramasa who was moriyaku of Yoshinobu whose wife is from the Imagawa clan.

USAMI Sadamitsu sends Heizō to Suruga while NAGAO Kagetora's second visit to Kyoto. He orders Heizō to tell Chōkyū, former Toraōmaru who becomes a monk to kill TAKEDA Harunobu and tells what he should say in Suruga. But Hisa is afraid that her husband is sacrificed by Sadamitsu. She hopes that he will hold his life dear. Heizō says he will do it for justice but Hisa tells him if Chokyu succeeds in it, Heizō will be punished anyway.


In Kai, a girl is born betweeen Yoshinobu and Aya and Yoshinobu is so delighted with it. It is informed to IMAGAWA Yoshimoto. Jukeini tells him that Aya takes the backbone out of Yoshinobu as TAIGEN Sessai said. Then one of his attendants appears and tells him that a man called YAZAKI Heizo from Echigo visits him. Heizō meets Jukeini and tells her that he served the Suwa clan before and makes effort to avenge SUWA Yorishige. Jukeini is astonished whether he knows the Imagawa ckan is related to the Takeda clan, but she brings him to Zentokuji Temple.


At Zentokuji, Heizo tells Chōkyū that his father committed hara-kiri leaving the will that he should succeed him and his half sister Yu-u hime became a concubine of Sjingen as Sadamitsu told him. Chōkyū asks him what happened afterwards and then Jukeini says severely.
"She was killed."
She says that Yu-u hime was a caged bird after having given birth to a son and died of illness. In addition, she tells him that he is ignored in the Takeda clan and then he resolves to revenge himself on Shingen. He asks her to let him pass and secretly departs for Kai with the guidance of Heizo who disguises himself as yamabushi.


On his way, Chōkyū asks Heizō if he has a family or not and he answers that he left his family in Echigo. Chōkyū decides to go to Kōfu by himself and advises Heizō to return home. And Kansuke admires that Shirō who is guarded by AKIYAMA Nobutomo, keeper of Takatō Castle becomes sturdy. He instructs him in strategy but Shirō seems to be bored with it. Kansuke persuades him that he should learn it for the Takeda clan or Suwa clan.


After that he returns to Kōfu and learns that a young monk often visits O-Goto hime from Ritsu. She goes to Sekisuiji Temple where she lives and says that Shingen will visit there tomorrow. Hagino is dissatisfied that Shingen occasionally visits O-Goto hime but Sanjo Fujin is satisfied with her first grandchild. And Chōkyū meets Shingen at the temple on the following day. Heizō, who secretly sees how the land lies is found by his old friends, Denbée and Takichi.
"It's you, Heizō! What are you doing here?"
But he is dump as an oyster.


They suspect his behaviour and let Kansuke meet him. Kansuke remembers the words of Ritsu and presses him hard to tell him who the monk is. At last Heizō asks him to stop the monk who is former Toraomaru. And at sekisuiji, Chōkyū tells "Heiké Monogatari" to the women and Mari hime but Shingen takes a nap. Chōkyū approaches him to put a sleeved coverlet over him and then he takes a dagger from his bosom to kill him. However he gets up suddenly and shouts him that he knows everything. Then Shingen takes him to Tsutsujigasaki and tells him about Ōi Fujin who looked after him when he was a child. Shingen plans to take him in  but Yoshinobu opposes it violently.


Then Chōkyū approaches him to show just as he is. Though Kansuke tries to stop him, Chōkyū watches for his chance and draws Yoshinobu's dagger to kill him. But Hagino tries to intervene them and killed by Chōkyū. Shingen orders his vassals to confine him in a temple. Kansuke who returns home hears that both Takichi and Denbée made Heizō escape. He is so angry with it but Denbée says it's plotted by Jukeini. Kansuke is surprised and damns her.

One morning Kansuke wakes up ans finds Ritsu sits by him. Though she calls him darling, he tells her to call him "Father". Ritsu prays for her Marici given by Kansuke and tells O-Kuma that she serves breakfast for him instead of her. Kansuke asks her when Harunobu offered her the marriage with him. Sha says that her father HARA Toratane told her about it before she met Kansuke. He told her to give birth Kansuke's son so she emphasises that she hopes to be his wife and have his child rather than adopted by him. And in the year 1556, ŌKUMA Tomohide betrays NAGAO Kagetora and served Harunobu.


And then Tomohide and SANADA Yukitaka win the samurais who serve Kagetora over to Takeda's side and Harunobu departs for a battle as if he distracted himself from the sense of loss caused by the death of Yu-u hime. And Yukitaka asks Kansuke about his newly-married life but Kansuke says Ritsu is not his wife but an adopted daughter. Then he asks him whether he has parental affection or not and tells him to marry her because he has no will of making any of his son become her husband. Besides he declares if Kansuke has no child, he or his sons will be the strategist of the Takeda clan.


Yukitaka makes local samurais in northern Shinano from Kagetora by falling Amakazari Castle and Katsurayama Castle. Though Echigo is snowbound, Harunobu attacks Zenkōjidaitra and USAMI Sadamitsu thinks it may cause a battle. As Kagetora returned from Mt. Koya, his vassals band together than before but Harunobu is never provoked to fight against him and keeps staying in Fukashi Castle. This confrontation between them, the Third Battle of Kawanakajima ends without decisive result again.



However Harunobu says that his side won and the Ichikawa clan in northern shinano can hokd his territory by supporting him. But another battle against Kagetora may be unavoidable. After that shogun ASHIKAGA Yoshiteru suggests to him that he should make peace with Masatora and he accepts it subject to becoming the lord of Shinano. BABA Nobuharu worries that if he fights against Kagetora again, he will betray Yoshiteru but Kansuke says it's an equal fight because the lords of Shinano and Echigo fight each other.


However Kagetora is requested to succeed UESUGI Norimasa and become a Kanto kanrei. In reality, Yoshiteru who is surrounded by enemies depends on Kagetora and invites him to visit Kyoto. If he succeeds him, his position will be higher than that of shugo (daimyo) and he can conquer Kantō region and beat the Hōjō clan. Needless to say, he can beat Harunobu who seizes an opportunity to attack him. He decides to go to Kyoto again but he worries that he should make Nami marry anubody. Nami feels disappointed because she has no possibility of becoming his concubine and goes out from the castle in his absence to become a nun.

Meanwhile Kansuke also worries that he should find somebody who marries Ritsu. The sons of Takichi except Mokichi, the eldest son are adopted by other samurais but Ritsu doesn't like Mokichi. And Harunobu regrets that he could not love Yu-u hime and Shiro sufficiently and decides to become a priest in the cause of being benevolent to his vassals and people. In February 1559, he takes the tonsure and calls himself Shingen. At the same time, HARA Toratane, Yukitaka and Kansuke take the tonsure also and call themselves Seigan, Ittokusai and Dōki respectively (*). However Ritsu says that samurais take tonsure superficially and she intends to dispose his sakes. Kansuke who is confused and says,
"No, a small quantity of sake is allowed even for monks." (**)


And Heizō in Echigo, whose former lord MURAKAMI Yoshikiyo serves Kagetora is eager to become a strategist for the Nagao clan with bravado. He hopes to be a match for Kansuke but Hisa says she is happy as she, Heizo and their children are now. Then Sadamitsu intends to give him a try. He orders him to meet Chōkyū, former Toraōmaru. Sadamitsu tells him that Chōkyū is the very man who should kill Harunobu (Shingen) and tells him to go to Suruga as spy.

After defeating the Kiso clan, Kansuke returns to Osaka Kannon-in where Yu-u hime lived and finds Harunobu there. He says that he hold a polite funeral for her. Then he mentions his promise (of marriage) with her but Kansuke interrupts him and says that he hopes that Harunobu will govern Japan. Though he denies it, Kansuke asks him wait for a moment to go to Kyoto after beating NAGAO Kagetora as if he were the actual governoe of Japan already.


Harunobu brings the flute that Sanjo Fujin gave Yu-u hime brings to Kai. But she tells her husband that he should posses it and asks him about Shirō. He answers that he will be brought by a proper man. Harunobu thinks that  Kansuke will be gloomy for a while and as he says, he visits the tomb of Yu-u hime and promises to bring Shirō up to a brilliant samurai and make his win first battle.


And Kansuke says if it comes true, it's time he will exhaust his life span and will be with Yu-u hime again. After that Shirō and Shima move to Takatō Castle and Shirō is going to be educated by AKIYAMA Nobutomo, keeper of the castle. Kansuke offers Shima to serve him but she hopes to devote the rest of her life to Shirō. She thanks Kansuke to have given attention to Yu-u hime and makes sure that he should keep the promise with her.


In Echigo, some local rulers have territorial disputes and it involve the vassals of Kagetora. such disputes cause the rivalry between the two factions, those who formerly served the Uesugi clan and the others who served the Nagao clan. OKUMA Tomohide, who served Uesugi Norimasa before shows his anger but is warned by USAMI Sadamitsu. Kagetora remembers that his mother said that a real strong man needs no power when he became a boy monk in his childhood. After that he goes out of Kasugayama Castle. His elder sister Momo hime, wife of Nagao Masakage tells Sadamitsu and NAOE Sanetsuna that for Kagetora, his mother is the one and only existence whom he could trust.
 

Kansuke goes to somewhere also. He sends Harunobu a letter that says he wants to have a leave and then he visits Muryō Kōin Temple in Mt. Kōya where he visited before serving the Takeda clan. But at the same time, Kagetora also visits there because he was given his Buddhist name Sōshin before. That night Kansuke approaches kagetora who chants sutra and they fight each other but was scolded heavily by Sei-in, chief priest of Muryō Kōin. he shows a Mandala, a Buddhist visual schema of the enlightened mind and explains the importance of harmony to them. It reminds Kansuke of the relationship between lord and his vassals.


On the following day, they have breakfast together. Kansuke tells him that the death of Yu-u hime made him visit Mt.Koya and then they talk about the dispute of Kai and Echigo. However, if Kagetora defeats Harunobu, it's meaningless why he becomes a priest. Kagetora smiles wryly and says that he worries about it. And then Masakage and Sanetsuna with some attendants visit Kagetora with the vows of the vassals and ask him to return to Echigo. Kagetora learns that Tomohide starts a riot against Sadamitsu. He decides to go back and tells Kansuke who observes them secretly.  
"Tell your lord that I found an another enemy."


Kansuke returns to Kai also and tells Harunobu and Hara Toratane that he wants to adopt Ritsu. They agree with it and Harunobu shouts,
"Yu-u, alow Kansuke to do so."
Kansuke introduces Ritsu to Denbée, Takichi and his family and hands her a wooden box he was given at Muryō Kōin. There is a statue of Marici in it.
